Magnetic Gray Metallic vs. Underground

Does anyone have a picture comparing these two colors on actuals vehicles parked side-by-side? Doesn't even have to be Tacomas. Maybe I'm dense, but I just haven't been able to find one anywhere.

 

Its going to be real difficult to compare by picture.

As I understand it, MGM has metal flake. Underground does not.

 

IMHO Magnetic Grey Metallic is a superior color and has a lot of metal flake. Underground is just a solid base color with no depth and probably a lot cheaper for Toyota to spray. The underground color itself is not bad, just no character. My last 3 Toyota's have been MGM and if I could have gotten my Tacoma in MGM, I would have. Maybe 25's??

 

The underground is not a great color.

I don't like it. I own one. I would not get this color again. I thought I would like it. It's just bland.

 

My cousin runs an auto body shop. He told me a while back that Toyotas solid colors don’t get a clear coat, but the colors with metal flake do. To me, that sounds like MGM could be a better choice.

 

My understanding is all solid colors are a single coat spray which reduce costs.

 

perfect! can you go park it next to something in MGM and take a picture?

I'm getting a whole lot of opinions, which I expected because this is the internet, but I only asked for a picture lol

 

I don't know where I'd even find one. I haven't seen too many of the metallic ones where I live. They basically only come in model T / Tesla colors around here. Bland as hell. White, black and underground.

 

MGM is not available on the new tacomas, but was a super common toyota color for many years. that is why i'm so confused i can't find a simple direct side-by-side comparison. tacoma, rav4, 4runner, corolla, camry, i dont care lol.

 

He's wrong. They are gloss paints and still have clearcoat. I have a friend who retired from the Indiana Toyota plant and worked their spray booth. They all get clear coat.

 

As I sort-of alluded to, a picture is going to be difficult.

The reason why its going to be difficult is that metallic paints do not photograph well. A camera just can't capture the depth and reflection of a metallic paint.

In a picture, MGM looks like this.




In person however, metallic paints look very different. It has a subtle sparkle to it that shifts as you walk around the truck. You won't be able to see it unless you look at them side by side in person, in sunlight.

 

My SR5 is Underground. I adore the color. I don't need the metallic. Every other Toyota I've had for years has been a metallic color. My wife's 2021 black Lexus NX is technically sparkly metallic 'Caviar.' It's nice to have my Taco in a subtle and simple color. I had a few choices. Underground was mine.

 

i actually prefer flat colors.

despite the advice about how MGM won't be truly represented in a picture, i don't care - what i am trying to see is a simple comparison of the how the shades appear in the same lighting. so as much as i appreciate all the discussion, i still would love to see the direct comparison pic i requested, if someone can make it happen.

otherwise i'll eventually get my truck, and just park next to something MGM lol.

 

Underground is a cool color, but it is certainly higher maintenance than MGM.

I would highly recommend a Pro detailer and one of the Modesta products. I had BC-04 on my black Corvette. Probably one of the top products on the market.

My wife’s RAV4 is MGM, My Tacoma is Underground. I’d say the MGM is slightly lighter, and as others have said has metal flakes, mgm is brighter, hides scratches slightly better. Underground is a kinda flat grey but looks dark blue in low light conditions. If I had to choose between the 2 it would be a tough choice, maybe a slight edge to underground because of the color changes with lighting? Pictures won’t do either justice. You really need to visit a Toyota dealership and physically get eyes on the 2.
