What "ring" are you talking about?
If you mean the oil pan drain plug gasket, just pry it off with your fingernail or a sharp tool unless you're too fraid then get someone more manly.

 

That's probably what the mechanic who over tightened with wrong torque did. Didn't know not applying brute force to expensive stuff was unmanly, only real men do that prob.

 

Two O-rings are provided with the OEM Filter:

Both come off easy with a flathead screwdriver.

the reason the umpalubers at the dealership overtighten is they are familiar with twist ons that rely on compression of the rubber seal to prevent leaks and no one explained it to them. on this setup, tightening does nothing but make it harder to get off. it is the binding of the big O ring on the housing walls that seals it. original plastic housing is just fine if you don't abuse it by overtightening. see torque specs. Aluminum is fine but overkill imho.
edit: and definitely wipe some oil on the O ring so it slides in place easily without tearing as you are tightening to spec.

 

The OEM drain plug gaskets have a blue backing and essentially glue themselves to the pan. That part is normal unless they also overtightened the drain plug. I use a pick or flathead screwdriver to carefully pry it off.

Sucks about the filter housing. Like many on here, I've passed on the free changes and you won't have this issue again when you do it yourself. Just don't overtighten it.

 

I think I’m gonna buy me a spare composite not aluminum one just in case. I was searching and it looks like Bam Wholesale Parts has the best price does anyone know a better place to purchase?

 

When I bought my 2019, I bought the aluminum version,,, and it has been sitting in a box in the basement every since, as we have always properly tightened the OE composite cap on and haven't had any issues with it. Oh well, I have a backup, no harm.

The guy at Toyota parts store told me they dont make aluminum version anymore. Also, the plastic cost me 79$, which is crazy.

I replaced it, no more leaking. Just going to wait now for oil to settle in and make sure it doesnt need topping or anything, and i am getting that o ring and bolt for next time.

 

Well, good thing I bought one long ago. Amazon probably still sells it.

I will try to find one for next oil change, plastic should be ok if not, ill be doing oil changes anyway. No more " certified well trained Toyota technicians " .

Speaking of which I see leak there but not from drain plug or the oil filter housing. Probably maybe some spilled earlier and dripped down, will check with UV flashlight

 

Oil drain plug is also leaking, the gasket that was half assed is probably reason why

 

2 FT BREAKER bar is what I used after one of the "free" toyota care oil changes. I changed to the Aluminum cap last time too. no leaks so far.
