I do like bikes...but that load was for 4 riders. We could have carried more though, we left some at home!

Thanks a lot man! It's been really useful thus far.

Here's a crappy picture of what the crossbars look like when the basket it removed. You can see how low profile they are.

3/4" for the top rails, diagonal supports, and light hoop. 1" for the bottom rail.

I think it's about 7-7.5" from the roof to the top of the basket.

What size lights did you use? And how did the powdercoat hold up on conduit? Do anything special to make the powder stick?

I think the lights are a little less than a 6" OD. The powdercoating place said it was really difficult to coat. I'm not sure what all they did, but they recommended stripping the galvanized coating first.

On a side note, I'm helping my brother with a roof basket project for his truck and I found tubing that I think would be much better. It's roughly the same wall thickness, cheap, and not galvanized. It bends pretty well too. Here's a link to what I got for that: Small parts dot com The prices definitely increased though since the last time I looked. It was like 6 or $7 before. Maybe the price of steel has gone up? But they do offer free shipping. It's worth watching to see if the price goes down.

Steel prices are going crazy right now. I'm an estimator for my step-dads building supply company and we're getting price increases on metal studs and framing materials twice a month lately.

    Sweet basket btw :D

Yea it looks good. I'll be using 3/4" DOM tubing for mine. Since I already have the factory roof rack I'll probably make the first one to mount to that, then do a version that mounts directly to the roof without the rack.

Sorry to revive this ancient thread, but how would you attach this to the roof? The factory little tabs for a rack seem super flimsy. I'm wondering about a roof basket for my truck...but am very curious on how to secure it to the roof.

I didn't use any part of the OEM rack to attach it. There are 4 threaded holes on either side of the roof in the channels, two in the front an two in the rear. These are the points to anchor to. They are M6 threads. It is very tricky to get metal tabs like I have on my crossbars to fit in the channels right though as they are curved in 3 dimensions. It took a lot of grinding and trial an error to get them to fit.
