Wondering what everyone is running for AGM batteries I recently about a year ago placed a 24agm battery and it is a little small for the battery tray wondering will a 34agm work better and fit better or do I need a 27agm. Open to all suggestions.

I had a PITA getting my 27 to fit. The new one may be 1/16 bigger/taller at most but it's enough to cause an issue. Part of the reason is that only one side of the tie down strap has threads so the battery casing has to be an exact match for the OEM one.

I have an upgraded tie down holder for a 27 or a group 34 so holding it in place won't be an issue.

This is because the stock battery holds on the 2015 (and maybe other 2.5G years) is meant for a proprietary size battery that came from the factory. The proprietary one is around 5/8" to 3/4" shorter than a regular BCI group 27.

The fix is to either modify the factory bracket by cutting and drilling out the rigid J post and replacing with an aftermarket one (Autozone sells them) or just get a fancy new tie down from Amazon.

I like my X2 from Batteries Plus. Choose it over the Northstar version because of the longer warranty. I did have to add the voltage booster to get a proper charge. No problems so far and it's been in there for a few years.

I went X2 as well. Just had to lift the handle on the battery to make it fit. I'm also running a Voltage booster and it makes a BIG difference in charging these things. I had an optima here before, with another two optimas as aux batteries, all 27F.

Third gen I believe was specced with a smaller 24F from factory. 2G tow package trucks (like mine) came with a 27F and a different tray.

OP, I’ve also gone down to a 24F for weight savings. There’s no problem doing this unless you have a lot of electrical draws when the engine isn’t running.

Yeah mine has the tow package just wanting to know if staying with a 24F AGM battery is a good route to stick with.

If you don't need the capacity, yeah, sticking with a smaller battery makes perfect sense.

Do you have a voltage booster? You usually won't get the full capacity of an AGM without that. It'll only charge up so far without higher voltage. Won't hurt anything, you just won't get the rated capacity of the battery.

I don't have a voltage booster where can I get one of those from?

I had a Pelfrybilt battery tray sitting the garage but didn’t need a new battery for a long time. And come to find out, the 27F didn’t fit in there like it was supposed too. I was bummed.

Make one using a mini diode and 2 add a fuse adapters.

I ordered the diode from O'Rielly's and picked up the next day. In my area they are not in the stores.

I just downgraded from a 6 year old X2 to a less expensive Interstate AGM. I removed the booster as it can shorten the life of a regular AGM
battery from excessive float voltage. The mod is needed for the X2 battery in my opinion.

My truck came with a 27F and I downsized with no problems. The X2 24F has better specs than any 27F lead acid battery. And weighs more also.

The Group 27 EFB (enhanced flooded battery) from Rural King fit just fine into my 2015 when the OEM battery came out. The hold-down clamp was no problem at all.

Are AGMs not consistent with BCI sizing?

I've been running a NorthStar 27 as the primary battery since 2019. No issues getting it to fit (using the OffGrid Engineering tiedown)

That said Im definitely going to be downsizing to a 24 next time I need to buy batteries. A 27 is a lot of weight for that little core support, and its taking its toll. Probably too late for me honestly. But if you dont need a lot of power, Id 100% stick with a 24

Even if you do need more power, you can look into a dual battery system with the 2nd behind the rear seats or in the bed of the truck
