Amanda’s old minifridge was a lot newer than I thought it was, with a manufacture date of December 6th, 2012; I got it in a large scrap load on Facebook marketplace, but ultimately decided not to scrap it when I was told that it still worked. I had to fix the door, but it served Amanda well for about six months; Amanda’s cat unfortunately got the door open while she was staying at my house for the weekend, the door stayed open all weekend, all of Amanda’s food went bad, and the fan motor burned out or something. I got this thing for free, and Amanda recently bought a brand new fridge, so I scrapped it…

I was driving Amanda home last night and I saw this curbside in front of somebody’s house on County Line Road, even though it was dark! I immediately turned around and went back; I was shocked to discover that it appeared fairly new and still had plastic on the cord. A fellow autistic HVAC enthusiast of mine who lives in NYC told me that the 5,000-BTU Midea window A/Cs are actually halfway decent, and that if worked I should clean it up and sell it. Now that I have daylight and I see inside the unit, I can see that it is disgusting. However, this isn’t a death sentence; I plugged it in, and unit turns on and blows air on all settings, but the compressor doesn’t seem to be engaging. Again, not a death sentence because it is under 60°F right now and that might be preventing the compressor from engaging; I will fire up the unit when it’s warmer and see if it turns on. If it turns on, I will take all of the metal parts off to see just how dirty it is and see if it’s worth cleaning up. If it does not work, then I will just scrap it. Either way I got it for free. It’s nothing but pure profit!

R32 refrigerant; I’ve heard of this stuff before, but I have never seen a window unit that uses anything but R-22 or R410a. All but two of the refrigerators that I have scrapped used either R-12 or R134a (the exceptions being a 1940s fridge that likely used what it used due to wartime shortages, and a newer minifridge that I got from Amanda’s neighbor). Most of the fridges that I’ve scrapped have been R134a, with a less than half a dozen being R-12. My LG window A/C, which was purchased new just over a year ago, uses R410a; I have no idea how old the Midea is or why it uses R32…

 

R32 is pretty popular with wall units nowadays. R-410a is out there too obviously. I bought a unit at HD a couple of years ago that was R32. I was surprised.

I spotted this Bryant central A/C unit in a business complex that we made a delivery in yesterday, and when I went back after work, it was still there; I knocked on the door at the building it seemed to have come from, and nobody could tell me anything other than the fact that an air-conditioner had been replaced recently. They believed that installer was coming back for it, but it seemed to have been there for a couple days; I did not take it yesterday…
