I'm a HUGE proponent of bolt on because they come off easy to respray.

But for the ~300$ range, I see the allure of weld on....

Taken off once for rocker panel dent fix.

Taking them off in the spring for respray, should have this year but I was lazy.

They come off and back on super easy, it's the first time install that takes a while, to figure out what goes where and whatever. When I took them down and off for the cab work (and then left them off for the road trip) it took me like 20 minutes to get them back up the second time.

I still don't have that front bolt in that you need to gumby your way through the frame to get to. Might do that when I put them back up after the spring respray!

If they were welded on, I'd just respray on the truck, mask the truck off pretty good and go at it.

I mean we can MAKE IT bolt on :p but that's a good reason, too.

You're more motivated then I am. Its not that hard but I always end up doing it in a driveway in the cold.

I just worry about corrosion between the slider plate and the frame plate.

Making them bolt ons does not seem like an easy task. Mobtown tried and came up with this. Unsupported leg on the back aint great. He wanted 100% bolt on no hole drilling so We probably could put a support back there.

Hey speaking of which, do you know LaTeX at all?

Fair concern. There was nothing when I took them down the first time, but I took them down after about 6 months at the end of 2020. They stayed off through the winter, I put them back up after the spring road trip in 2021. So they've been on since then, they'll be coming off in spring of '25, so a 4 year window. We'll see what it looks like under there.

I say that, but....There's every chance it doesn't happen

Throw up some newspaper on the doors, wire brush the rust to a solid 75%, hit it with primer and rattle can bed liner on the truck, and off we go!

I have the SOS ones with the upward facing goop collectors. This is the picture from John's thread, I knew I'd seen them recently! The material connecting the slider to the plates is an upward facing V. They collect a ton of dirt and muck. They take a pounding ( :p ) BUT they get gummed up. That's part of wanting to take them off is doing a good clean, make sure there's no real rust forming anywhere. If there is, patch it up now before it becomes a problem.

    upload_2024-11-5_8-21-14.jpg

Oh that was a joke for drilling holes into Harry's frame. Making them into bolt on would be chaos. For 300$ and a couple skilled welders within beer-shot, I would highly recommend weld on in that case :D
