It is one of life's most surreal experiences to stand at the base of a true giant redwood, or sequoia. It truly boggles the mind to be looking at a tree trunk that is 20'+ in diameter. Redwoods are coastal, and mostly grow on the far north coast of California, and just barely into southern Oregon. Sequoias are a mountain species, closely related to the redwood. Redwoods grow slightly taller, sequoias slightly larger in diameter.

These are a couple pics from the California Calaveras Big Trees State Park in northern CA, by the town of Arnold, in the Sierra foothills.

That's me for scale, I'm right at 6' tall. This one became famous as the tree you could drive a car through. These are moderate sized sequoias, somewhere around 17 - 20' in diameter.
