""The biggest changes are to the engine, although it is surprisingly similar to the old carbureted DR-Z400 powerplant. The new DRZ-Z4S sees bore and stroke remain at 90 mm and 62.6 mm respectively. The bike still has a five-speed gearbox, although the gossip on social media says the gear ratios are revised. A slipper clutch comes standard.

However, changes were obviously required to graft an EFI system onto the head, and to update the little 400 to meet the current Euro5+ emissions standard. The DR-Z4S gets new intake and exhaust ports and changes to the combustion chamber (resulting in a slight drop in compression), a new piston and crankcase that improve mechanical efficiency and new intake and exhaust valves. Add it all up and you have a bike that can be legally sold in the EU once more, but it sees a roughly 2-horsepower drop in muscle, to 37.5 horsepower, with max power hitting at 8,000 rpm, 500 rpm higher than the old 400. It makes 27.3 pound-feet of torque, which is roughly the same as the old model, depending whose figures you believe.""

Looks like Suzuki did the exact same thing that Yamaha did with their WR450 powerplant back in 2012. The tried n true 5 valve 450cc motor that yamaha had been making and putting in the YZ450 and WR450 and quads for over a decade simply add the one or two necessary sensors to be able to utilize a throttle body, the motor itself remained mostly the same.

I dont see this as a bad thing tbh, take the already bulletproof proven DRZ400 motor and simply modernize it with fuel injection. And as long as the 5 speed trans has enough % difference between first and 5th its fine.... your always going to try and shift N+1 gears anyways haha

yea I agree, should be decent I would bet

I would take a better power band over a +2 peak hp figure any day of the week

That new DRZ-SM looks like fun. In the spring, I'm going to sell my FJR and look for something smaller. The FJR is a fantastic bike, but my rides are not day long (plus); they're usually for just a couple/few hours once in a while.

good points on the trans i wonder if they did basically the 6th gear mod gearing setup. id love to test ride one when they come out since id be interested in a modern drz to just add in to the stable to rip around on lol

But in the big scheme FI doesn't do anything for the bike except get rid of people having to figure out jetting.

    I can't say I'd go buy a 9k new one vs a decent carb one for 5k.

Wonder if they went to a plastic tank yet or not?

Excf hands down if i had the money. 100 extra CCs.

But realistically id buy a used excf over a 13k new one too. Lol.

Yeah depends on the riding. My recent dirtbike trip saw elevations of near 9500ft down all the way to 3kft in the mater of 15 or so miles. FI keeps everything fueling perfect vs what a carbed bike would do with those elevation changes. Hell one trip I did 140ft BELOW sealevel to 9500ft ABOVE in one day haha.

But a 4k price premium for the same motor with FI if it was just an around town only a thousand or two elevation gain max... yeah not worth it unless other features made it worthwhile (hence why I keep the lil XT225 as my round town bike)

i rode my drz up pikes peak without any jetting changes. still ran ok. cant confirm it was the best or if it was just down on power from the altitude. im thinking the latter, since a carb technically does adjust via atmospheric pressure.

but there is the benefit and i suppose cold weather changes too. i would put this in a "reliability" category i think.

im curious if they will bring all those 390/125 models to the states.

also odd they are making so many more models/platforms when they have had a terrible fiscal year.

I can't find the post now, but saw one on instagram earlier that there will be a tuareg 457 coming out, too. That lightweight class is getting spicy with options.

I would think the 390's would. I'd be shocked if the 125's make it.

I feel like these smaller bikes wouldn’t be that expensive to make anyways since it’s the same 390 engine and all made in India.
