Can't get axle nut off

I can't get one of my axle nuts off. The dust cover was hard to get off and when it did I saw the axle threads and nut were well-rusted. Looks like the previous owner bent the dust cap and so water got in for years. The other side is fine.

I'm using a medium-quality impact wrench. I have been soaking it with PB Blaster for 3 days, have tried heating the nut with a small propane torch. It's not budging.

What next? Should I try a real torch? A stronger impact wrench?

Use an impact wrench with at least 500 ft-lb torque.

Make sure you're using no socket extensions or drive size adapters as those reduce the impact.

While heating the nut with your torch, melt a candle on it to let the wax wick into the threads.

If all else fails, use a cutoff wheel and cut a few slits in the nut, taking care not to nick the CV shaft, then chisel the nut off.

Your next battle after removing the nut would be to separate the CV shaft from the hub splines.

 

Put a lug nut on and use it as a stop. I then used about 4 feet of cheater bar.

 

That did the trick, many thanks. I was going to go buy a bigger impact.

 

What kind of Impact were you using? Air or Battery powered?

 

Air @ 125psi. It was about $130 from O'Reilly. I don't remember the rating.

 

Air does provide more impacts per rotation then battery. But the support from the jack stand provides something more for those impacts to work against. Glad it worked for you.
