    I just found this read
Metallic paint is more durable and resistant to chipping and fading than nonmetallic paint. so those who have red vehicles check if they metallic or not. just saying

I always used a well known brand car wash liquid when I use to wash my vehicles. Many vehicles today have clear coats that are suppose to deter a lot of that paint fading we had years ago. I think ceramic coatings are also a great thing to have on your exterior finish.

Keeping a nice layer of dirt and dust on your truck, with maybe an annually wash prevents this right? I always find it so strange these issues pop up for people who truly baby and take great care of their car's paint. Anyways, sub'd for just in case it turns into a "how to vinyl wrap your roof" thread.

Seems its the same for those who baby their cars, will end up with all the engine issues.

Have had my inferno for 6 years and haven't seen any paint problems. I DID wrap the roof and half the hood about 2 years ago, so that probably helps.

Possibly failed clear as you suspect and possibly UV has damaged the red base (see post 49) breaking the bond between the clear and base. In the 1970s the Chevy paint was probably acrylic lacquer with no clear coat. And there is a a world of difference between annual UV exposure in NY and Phoenix.

    I have a Gashole
That is exactly it, combined with paint thickness that is too thin. Toyota has admitted to several on this forum that there is an issue. I have seen a few other MGMs on the road that have the same issue.
Here is another discussion about MGMs
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/is-that-bad-mgm-paint-faded-2018.693358/

A friend with a 2008 MGM Sequoia has the same problem on his roof.
My neighbor has a 2nd gen Tacoma in Blue that was always garage kept. He left his outside for a few months this year and his roof is doing the same.
Toyota may have great mechanical vehicles which will allow them to run for hundreds of thousands of miles, just don't expect it to look good going down the road. They really need to get their act together.
I was hoping to trade my Taco in for a Tundra but this has left a real sour taste in my mouth knowing my new truck will be outside. May have to revisit F150s or avoid anything but Silver (boring)

Here are some photos of my 2017 Tacoma at 70k miles. Roof, hood and mirrors are shot. Went through dealer where I bought it and since warranty expired nothing they can do. I have 4 Toyota vehicles of 4 different colors and ages and this being the newest. Something wrong with that right there. Very frustrated!!

My 2018 did the exact same thing and I got no help from Toyota either. Now it’s starting on the rear upper corners of the front fenders.

I have an ‘18 inferno too. Texas heat too. It lives in a garage at night and weekends, and 50/50 in a parking garage or surface lot during 7a-6p work days. I need to make sure I get another good coat of paint protection on it.

When it was spankin’ new, there was a small blem on the hood edge near the hinge that at the right angle, you could see what look like heat damage. Had to be the right angle and you generally wouldn’t ever see it. Toyota brushed me off.

Mine is fine, no issues, however, I have been using ceramic coatings for years.

Considering there’s so many of us having the exact same areas with paint issues on inferno maybe we need to get a class action going. As a consumer the business should be providing acceptable products and nothing about a brand new truck starting to have paint issues in 2-3 years is acceptable.

That’s a harsh outcome. I have an ‘18 inferno and paint is just fine. It’s stays outside in Texas heat 1 out of 2 workdays and is in the garage otherwise.

17 Inferno, Texas heat too. Stays outside no covered parking no issues. However this vehicle has a ceramic coating and gets a ceramic topper 3 times a year. From the looks of you top are you going through automatic car washes or washing the vehicle with dish soap?

Here is my 2017 SSM. 26K miles, always hand washed and waxed. My 2013 red Avalon sits in the same driveway and has none of this. The Tacoma goes to the shop tomorrow for roof paint. The clear is actually flaking off.

Mine just started this Sh&t... 2017 and it's been outside most of it's life, but I'm in the Bay Area where we do not get extreme weather at all. And it happened QUICK! Between last wash and now (probably a month and a half), it just came out strong on the roof. I don't do anything application wise, but wash with a Mother's (what I thought was a high quality soap/ wax)... I'm not a frequent washer at all, so I guess I'm some evidence AGAINST the light layer of dust/ dirt helping this problem, lol.

I had some concern about 4 years ago because a side mirror was spotted terribly. It was under warranty, so no problem, they just replaced it. I even asked about the rest of the paint... they said the mirrors tend to do that because of the color, thinner clear coat, and that it's on plastic vs. metal. My other mirror is now doing it, and the roof is well on it's way. I'm pissed... I just sold a 24 year old Jetta I bought new that just started this issue last year...

No up on clay process, or anything else, but am the kind of personality that can't just live with this. What is the best approach to "fixing it" so I don't have to worry about it in the future? Would a paint job be any better? Would they put a better clear coat on it, or am I only gonna see a few years out of that fix? What are the rough costs associated with possible fixes? Thanks in advance!

16, parked outside, no issues. Never sees a car wash and out here in the not-very-sunny pacific northwest, though.

My 2017 had the roof clear that failed and when it started, it got worse, quick, and like you, got to a point that I just had to get it fixed.

Took it to a paint shop that prepped the roof after removing the HMSL and shark fin, re-sprayed the color and then new clear. Replaced the old HMSL with a new revised light so no silicone or bezel. Looks soooo much better. Cost me $2000.00
