OVS Expedition Cap

I answered my own question. Just finished assembling it in place by myself. Very easy. Pretty impressed with the cap. Seems well made.

 

Genuinely really impressed with the build quality. I ordered some different brackets to mount it. DONT USE POWER TOOLS WHEN TIGHTENING the mounting brackets, I made that mistake and it broke 2 bracket bolts. Very happy with it all in all and did attempt to “break in” because security is my top priority and could not get the hinges off. I’ve been driving around with it for a week now and it feels really solid, I do think it’s pretty heavy for a topper but it’s built good and feels sturdy. No rattles while driving around either.

I got mine for 10% off as well for an “end of month sale” it seems like they do this pretty regularly so if anyone in the future is looking for one I’d wait for them to have a 10% sale. Saves 250$.

 

So how's the metal cap vs a fiberglass version when camping in the heat? For those who live in a hot dry climate it seems the novelty of this affordable cap is wearing off.

 

Are they really 230LBS, seems heavy.

 

I know the Bakflip X4S weighs about 100lbs. 230# for a shell doesn't seem like much.

 

The average canopy weight we go by if people don't know what theirs weighs is 200lbs. 230 for a metal one isn't bad in my opinion. People have told me some Leer fiberglass ones are 400lbs or something like that.

 

alucab and gfc toppers not campers are both under 200 lbs.

dirtbox overland topper might be under 200 lbs too i forget.

the kuat ibex is like a rack/shell hybrid kinda deal under 150 lbs i think.

 

Just checked with OVS and they said the Tacoma DCSB shell/cap weighs 175 lbs.

 

Any chance you could provide the width of the top plate for the Tacoma model? I've been searching online but I'm not finding it anywhere. image for reference

 

Love mine so far. Make sure you retighten all hardware after about a half tank or so. They do get loose. Full disclosure though, OVS does recommend retightening everything after 50 miles.
