Also for anybody doing their drain/fill, swap the oil drain plug with a fumoto valve, and use the drain plug for the transmission drain plug. Or skip the fumoto if you're rock crawling without a skid plate

My mechanic inserted a new longer bolt. Added a new seal and washer on it. Its tight and doesn't leak.

Update on my fix: still holding and no signs of leaks after numerous offroading trips and a 3600-mile road trip

    I found a permanent fix.

I just messed up my threads in the trans case this past weekend and found this post in desperation. Because the fill plug was only long enough to catch about 3 of threads there were still some good ones remaining. I read all of this and bought an M18x1.5 bolt that's an oil drain plug for a diesel Volvo and it caught all the remaining threads and came with a copper gasket that seated onto the case.

Pretty much what my mechanic did for mine. I don't have this issue anymore as I traded my truck in.
