285/70/18 - 34” on 24 models

Just wanted to post to help others still researching. I just had a set of Falken Wildpeak at4w installed. No rubbing so far on full lock or speed bumps.

285/70-18 Falken Wildpeak C load.
No lift. No spacers. OEM 18” wheels.

FYI. For those contemplating about TVD vinyl wheel overlays. They’re a pain in the ass to install and they got shredded on the tire install.

 

People are buying large trucks and SUVs as their pavement single passenger commuter vehicles. Overall EPA fleet standards require efficiency improvements. Toyota is saving weight and having a quieter vehicle by using this "felt" material. I guarantee it is still plastic, just a fiber looking plastic composition. It may also cost less than the hard plastic vacuum formed liners, but that's not the only reason Toyota made the change.

 

So confused that some people get rubbing with this size. Did you remove the crash pad? What was impact to ride quality and performance ?

 

Crash pad is still in place. It was hard to find people on the internet running this with the 18” OEM off road wheels. One guy on tacoma4g.com with 18” TRD sport wheels said he was getting very little rubbing on the crash pad so he removed it. (I think you were talking to him lol) I’ve never ran tires this close to rubbing so I can’t speak on whether it’ll rub when I get on a trail. I probably won’t be able to get to some trails until next week but I’ll report back then!

 

That’s close. How’s the ride and MPG/ acceleration ?

 

It’s riding great. I drive mostly on normal and the acceleration doesn’t feel much different. This truck has been great. I’ve had a rooftop tent, 2 big dogs, and camping equipment in the bed and it hasn’t felt bogged down one bit.

 

Good info on the tire machines shredding the vinyl, I was wondering about that.
I still have no idea if im keeping the ugly sport wheels...

 

I will say though. I thought I did a decent job with the vinyl and it withstood the PNW rain we’ve had so far. I actually ordered a new set. I think the second try will be even better. I think cleaning the wheel really well is the key.

 

is this the largest wheel/tire size that will fit on a stock trailhunter?

 

Went with Falken AT4W in 275/70/18. Plenty big for me. I like it. Seems right at the limit.

 

I was just contemplating that exact same size, I don’t need a monster truck…

What was the stock size that was on there?

 

It was 265/70/18 on the most feeble Wrangler OEM tires ever made. I think they are made of cardboard and black paint.

My size went up by 0.8" -- these tires are 33.4" and the old ones were 32.6". And it checks out. I did a bunch of measurements and the truck got about a 0.4" lift all around.

The biggest thing is that these tires are very high quality. It's immediately apparent from how they look and feel and the drive is so smooth and planted. There is absolutely no comparison whatsoever. Falken makes a good product.

The tires took about 1.5 ounces each to balance? Not sure if that's good or bad. Just FYI.

Anyone else experience DT ignoring the yellow dot on the tire (lining it up with the valve stem)? They ignored the dot on my tires. They didn’t even know what it meant. I feel like this is lazy as they rely entirely on the road force balancer, resulting in more weights than needed. Anyone have any thoughts? I don’t think there’s much vibration but I can’t tell for sure. Should I get them done correctly?

 

I'm curious to know if you had to adjust the caster for your wheels? I tried to install 275/70/R18 Goodyear DuraTrac RT tires on my '24 TRD Pro and they did not work sadly. They fit on the truck for sure but when you crank the wheels to turn into a parking spot or back into a space they rubbed pretty bad on the oem mud flaps. I could see altering them a bit to fit (the mud flaps) but I would rather not. I'd like to know if these Falken Wildpeak AT4 tires rub at all when you crank the wheels. They were one of the options I had considered in that exact size configuration you're showing on your Trailhunter. It's difficult to tell from the photos you have posted... I think the 275 size looks better on the truck than the 265's i ended up going with to fit...

 

I didn’t have to adjust anything. And I don’t think these run small either. I thought I heard the slightest of rub at first but I see no evidence of rub. 275 is conservative. I’ll do a YouTube video soon and include some footage of clearance if that helps you. I can do full lock and drive forward and backward .

 

I had 285 x 70x18 nitto ridge Grapper on my 24 pro with original mud flaps and no rubbing and they didn't adjust anything.

 

Hey guys - PSI question — I got the E load Falken at4w in 275/70/18 — Falken said to run 38 but it was very “bouncy”— I dropped down to 34 and it’s less bouncy. I did use the online load capacity tool and even at 35 I’ve got plenty of load capability but it doesn’t show anything below 35. Is it safe to run an E load under 35? And what are y’all running on your E load tires?
