Just hit 200k on my 19' DCSB 4x4 Sport. This truck is used for work and I drive an average of 30k per year. I am debating on trading it in for another 3rd gen with less than 30k. Anyone have any insight on this? My truck has Bilstein 6112 kit and Icon leaf pack. I also babied this thing from day 1. I just don't want to ever be stranded without a vehicle and from what I understand anything over 100k is going to eventually start having issues. I see the guy on youtube with 400k+, so that does give me hope. Dealer offered me 20k to trade in.

Well I sure as hell would not pay 20k for a taco with 200k miles, so I would take that deal minus any other information. However, I recommend you do some market research. Check prices on ads for trucks similar to yours.

Also keep in mind that the dealer has much more information about the market than you do.

There really is no telling, but any vehicle with 200k miles on it, is going to start needing extra care/parts. Since you need it to work, I would get a new truck and consider the cost of doing business.

Neither would I,, but someone else will. Some teen would love to have a 3rd gen that isn't $30k+

I can give you one graph point. I had to lookup up the Kelly blue book value of my 2020 OR with 30k miles, mods, and body damage for a legal purpose last month. KBB said it’s worth 30k. I paid 35k for it new.

The best time to sell and buy is when you don't need to. In other words, that is when you can shop for the best deal. If it shits da bed, you are gonna get bent. If something large like the engine or transmission goes, your truck is now worth about $3-5k in trade,,, or you can pay the shop fees, pay for a wrecker, and have it shipped elsewhere for another offer.

Not to change the subject to 4th gens too much, but I've been off the forums for a year or two. How are the 4th gens fairing? I hear mixed feedback. Not a huge fan of the new look. I think they are catering to the ECO crowd way too much and made a mistake with the 4cycl

If your truck is used for your livelihood getting newer one with fewer miles is probably smart. That being said if you have taken care of it, and babied it like you said I don’t think 200k is really that many miles. 30k a year, I’m guessing that’s a lot of highway miles?

My 16 is sitting a 225k miles, it hasn’t been babied, used as a 4x4 trail rig. Repairs are starting to accumulate but I wheel this truck hard. The only problems is see these engines have are timing cover leaks/seaps. But it seems pretty hit or miss. As far as the rest of the truck goes, easy things to repair like u joints, shocks, tie rods, wheel bearings, serpentine might be due soon, but again if it’s been babied you probably won’t have issues for a long time.

These trucks are tough, the likelihood of it leaving you stranded is pretty small, if you don’t neglect major repairs or standard maintenance. I would personally run into to 250k or 300k before trying it in. That’s the whole appeal of Toyotas and tacomas in general. Statistically fewer problems, lower cost of ownership past 200k.

there was some issues with early trucks (just like there was with the 16 Tacomas).

from what ive seen thus far, people bash the 4cyl just cuz its a 4cyl but are very happy with the additional power over the 3g.

I've followed all maintanence schedule minus the Tranny oil change which i missed until 120k(not my fault - dealer said it wasnt needed). Oil changes every 5k. I have never had an issue with the truck. All of the mileage is highway with minimal shifting and I drive very softfooted. I take care of my stuff

yeah I wouldnt be worried just because it was at 200k. I'd much rather have a truck I know this history on vs a used truck you dont know how was maintained / treated even though it might have less miles on it.

I think they have some growing pains to go thru like the 16s did when that came out. So far there has been some transmission issues that have been corrected with a tsb and a few other small gremlins. I would wait until 25 or 26 to purchase a 4th gen, so the kinks get worked out.

the 4th gen is honestly a better truck in every way including the new 4cly engines. Time will tell on long term reliability, but I have more faith in Toyota engineers than all the armchair engineers on this forum.

All highway miles, driven conservatively,5k oils changes + scheduled maintenance. Yea this truck probably just barely broken in. It’s the kind of vehicle I would be looking for if I was buying used. I wouldn’t hesitate to put 2 years and 60k more miles on it. It’s honestly an ideal candidate to be a 400k mile truck one day with its usage and attention to maintenance. I would rather have a 200k mile truck that I know the history of than a used truck with less miles and worse maintenance history.

Keep running it and dont worry too much about the mileage, you've clearly taken great care of it.

Like its been mentioned before, its going to be a gamble to buy anything used, and most wont be as maintained as well as yours (nobody is doing 5k oil changes)

$20k is a high offer and you need a truck for work. 3rd Gens remain to buy currently, and 4th Gen remains a 4-banger turbo that is new ... some people find both of those to be at least potentially less reliable.
