Hi all, just nabbed a 2018 Tacoma 2.7l 2WD SR and was wondering why my tpms isn't showing up yet, I put new tpms sensors in my steel rims that were activated at napa took it for a drive expecting it to pop up evetually as I had read on here that you need to take it for a drive for 10 minutes at at least 40kms, did that and still nothing, also worth noting that where my tpms button should be under the steering column is not there, just a blank with the harness fitted into it, is there something I'm missing that I could do before oaying my local dealer $130 for a simple activation?? I have also read that maybe the ids of the new sensors have to be programed to the ecu?? Any help is appreciated

Also glad to be aboard this forum, i can see already the immense wealth of knowledge that you guys have gathered is invaluable to a 3rd gen taco newbie like myself, so thanks in advanced

Canadian I’m assuming with the C° and km/h speedo? You likely don’t have TPMS at all. Since the Canadian government didn’t require it like the US government Toyota simply didn’t put it on a lot of models. Most SRs in the US that did have TPMS did not have a dash readout for pressures, just a low pressure light that comes on. When you turn the key on, before cranking the engine, you should see the yellow TPMS symbol on the dash light up if you have it.

I was afraid of that :censored: talked to my local dealer before I bought the sensors and they ran my vin and said they'd work, now I just called them again and they said they'd have to scan it to see for sure

Canada does not believe in air pressure?

I also had aftermarket TPMS in my new wheels and tires. They would not connect and did not respond to the reset button even after a long drive. But, i was able to schedule a service visit with my Toyota dealership who was able to "scan" and pair them with the system. However, that did come at an out of pocket cost.

Yeah, just took it to them to scan, the technician went to each tire and the machine went beep and then he went to the dash and held the machine there for a bit and the machine made a a few beeps aswell, then he told me that "unfortunately it failed, it wasn't the aftermarket sensors, the hardware just isn't there the accept them" I asked if I could order the tpms module nessessary to make it happen but he said it still wouldn't work.

So....follow up question: if I were to get the tpms module shown below, wouldn't you think that would make it work, the software would have to be on the info screen from factory would it not??
It's a bummer because I already put thw sensors in my winter tires after them telling me that it could be done after literally running my VIN, you thing they would have said something if it didn't come with tpms from factory?

Sorry. Can't help you there. Unfortunately for you, mine worked like a charm so I didn't delve further into solutions. Best of luck.

The 3rd Gen Tacoma TPMS system needs sensor ID# Programmed into the PCM/ECU which erases the old ID #s.

Did they charge you for this?
You need a techstream or OBDII scanners to ready the current IDs in the memory of TPMS module. I assume you have IDs for your new sensors. Compare.
If different, need techstream or any obd2 scanners with tmps functions to enter IDs

Not having TPMS is a blessing to me. One less nanny crying when one of the sensors go for a shit. Amazingly, I check and adjust my tire pressures without a notification. For the guys who will say that it'll notify you when a tire is low when travelling, yeah I don't think so. On the vehicles that I've owned that had TPMS, they would notify you at some point, not in real time and maybe not that day! Seasonal tire switch out and not programming the winter wheels to the vehicle would notify you usually the next day. Programming for yourself is a $400 CAN TPMS tool. I was happy when I found out that my Taco doesn't have the option!

Did you miss the part where the OP confirmed that he in fact does not have TPMS like I suggested? Toyota didn’t include it on a lot of Canadian models because it isn’t required by law. Most (maybe all) SR trim trucks, even those with TPMS in the US, don’t have the dash display for actual pressure that you’re describing, just a light to indicate a tire is low.

The smart setup is to have cloned TPMS sensors for Autel.
I have 3 wheel sets for my '17 Tacoma and only one set of sensor ID#s are stored in the truck. I can swap out 4 wheels and the truck sees the same sensor ID#s, so no programming needed or buying a OBDII tool for programming.
    Gotta be smarter.

So I would have to buy aftermarket sensors? That are automatically set up for a truck without programming? Honestly I think they are a waste of time and money. I don't want or need this as an option. I'm smart enough that I don't need a sensor to tell me if I need air in my tires, or pay for a silly option that has no real value.

If you want to use two sets of wheels on the same truck, new aftermarket clone sensors in the second set of wheels use the same sensor ID#s as the first set of wheels, so no programming needed; yes.
Yes. You still follow the pressing of the TPMS button by your left knee.

May I inquire as to the utility of the three wheel sets?

    Sure!
OEM TRDOR alloys with Toyo Observe GSi6 dedicated winter tires, 16" TRD Beadlocks, and 17" TRD Rock Warriors. Every vehicle I have ever owned ends up with at least two wheelsets if not more. My Hanover-sold 1982 VW Golf GTI 1600 (#notarabbit) has 5 sets.
