Lately on cold mornings, when I shift into reverse it will sometimes slam into reverse, not overly hard but enough to notice. It's been a bit of a trend lately and I'm not sure what to keep an eye out for, or am I over thinking this and don't worry if it ain't broke?

Mine does not jolt but it felt like a bit jerky backing up just for the first 4 feet then ok. Only happened once

    Something to think about.
Cold mornings and a cold truck equals higher idle speed.
Rev is usually the quickest hydro engagement.

    Your description is self defeating.
Slamming into rev is way different than not overly hard.

I would say if this is only a cold start issue and it’s fine all other times, I would say it’s a normal situation.

My truck has a “harsher” engagement when stone cold and cold conditions..

I think honestly you maybe overthinking it sir.

I'd say check transmission fluid level properly.

I think it’s probably the Tacoma lurch Toyota tried to resolve this by lowering idle speed. Mine still does it on really cool mornings so I just warm up the truck to eliminate. JMHO

Do you know when Toyota tried to resolve this? My 21 idles so high when first started (in warm or cold weather) and it is one of the very few things that really annoys me about this truck! Wondering if I asked for a software update I could also get this fix! Makes pulling in or out of my tiny garage exciting if I don't let it idle for a couple of minutes first.

I think the 2021 year model was included in a TSB for this issue. Check with your local dealer service department and have them run your VIN.

All automobiles, at least since the introduction of the catalytic converter, raise the idle rpm for a short period after startup. Look at your tachometer.

At least one reason for this is to raise the temperature of the catalytic converter(s) so they work more effectively. This can lead to a harsh shift into drive or reverse. It’s normal and nothing to worry about.

Most likely your 2017 has non-greaseable Zerks on the rear shaft. Here is more info on Zerks.

Also, change or at least check the transmission fluid level.
