I think its because of the pussy 2nd gen's. Im pretty sure in '02 the TRD option was the off road option. If you had a TRD it meant you had the off road package. Now somehow you can drive around a Sporty truck with Toyota Racing Development. Seems like an oxymoron to me

BTW I have a Prerunner from back when it meant something

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
i'd hardly agree...in the 1st gens there were TRD "ORs" w/o a locker and prerunner still meant nothing then...

^ Well your right in a way. In 04 maybe, but in '02 if you had a prerunner it means you have V6, auto trans, locker, and 4wd suspension (just no 4wd). Now you can get a bunch of models labeled as a "prerunner" in the 2nd gens. Thats all I meant by the name meant something

According to this post you can't have a sporty race car, correct?

Sure you could. This thread has nothing to do with cars though

Edit: Now that I think about it that was kind of my thought. The newer tacomas are more like cars. Its still a truck and the best hands down. I just think the newer ones are moving closer and closer to cars. Sorry but that is my opinion. Sorry if it offends 2nd gen owners

So x-runners or mini trucks can't be sporty and go fast? It still doesn't seem like that is true to me. I understand the point you're trying to make.

If you understand than why are you arguing. I said nothing about going fast. And no an x runner would not have an off road TRD suspension which is once again what this thread is about

Actually prerunners came with 4 cylinders too...and if you got the TRD package with the 4 cylinder you only got an upgraded suspension, no locker.

Edit: I looked again and I guess you could get a 4 cyl. My point was more on the suspension that when you chose prerunner you chose a package. Prerunnner had a meaning in terms of options package. Now it doesnt really mean anything specific

When I look at 2002 though it looks like they only offered a TRD off road package. I dont see any TRD sport package available. Which is what the OP was asking originally.

All it means is 2wd tacoma with a 4wd suspension. I don't know what you're getting at.

Im not sure either. Now I am totally confused because it says "all S-Runners come with an exclusive discounted sport package that includes power windows and door locks, Deluxe AM/FM ETR/Cassette/CD with six speakers, air conditioning, sliding rear window with gray privacy glass and digital clock". So all the sport package meant was interior stuff in 2002? All I know is I have a Prerunner TRD Off Road SR5. Whatever that means lol

About the "they are more and more like cars" is not totally off the mark. Hell, I bought my first taco in 2006 and loved the fact that it rode smoothly and handled / braked better than a frontier. In fact, about 3 years ago I went over an overpass, and the traffic was stopped. I slammed on my brake, veered right (into the shoulder on the overpass) and went about a carlength past the vehicle stopped over the hill.

If that had been anything but a sports car or one hell of a good handling truck I'd have plowed that little car in front of me. I don't think I've had died in that potential wreck but I was certainly glad my truck handled it so gracefully.

The 2nd gens have a higher tow rating, and that's based upon a bunch of factors, one part being the suspension. Adding air lift bags to the truck really improves brake bucking on heavy loads and keeps your front end down for safety. I've driven both 1st and 2nd gens, and both do great, but I like some of the new electronic tech in the 2nd gens and how it handles towing. It's just my preference, but to each his own anyways right?

TLDR: In a few years people will be talking about how crappy 3rd gens have become and how they don't make em like they used to ;)

I just thought this thread was about people just calling their trucks "TRD", I'm not sure when it became specific to O/R models. Anyway, I still don't particularly understand your argument about the Prerunner thing either, the on 2nd gens it still means you get the same suspension as 4x4 models, although I guess it doesn't necessarily assure a locker, it still means something. I can understand you getting at the 2nd gen prerunners are much more common than 1st gen prerunners, but nonetheless the package does still have a unique meaning.
