I am trying to figure out the best way to fix my windshield. I seem to have some sort of residue on it that I can only see when it is raining due to the way the water beads off of it. I'm hoping for solutions that don't involve using a buffer since I do not have one.

So far I have tried using Dawn dish soap and water, isopropyl rubbing alcohol, NuFinish scratch doctor, and Spray away glass cleaner with zero effect on it.

I have had some tar/grease on my truck that I had to remove so I don't know if it is related to that or if perhaps I applied Rain-X poorly when I applied it last month and just never realized it because it hadn't been raining. Either way, I cannot get whatever it is off.

I apologize in advance that these photos are taken in the dark but it is the only chance I've had to document this as it is not visible when dry at all and this has been my only chance to get a photo in the rain.

The last photo is after rain has sat on there for a while without driving or using wipers.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that. What has been your experience with it?

Could also use glass cleaner and a box blade. I was parking my truck under a pine tree at work not realizing it. Sap all over my windshield used glass cleaner and box blade and cleaned it right upb

Are you only assuming it is on the outside, or have you tried all of those things on the inside as well?

I've used it on vehicle glass with great success. Also on shower doors...and the range top.

I can tell it is on the outside because of the way the water beads off of it in different ways.

I did not think to try a blade simply because I can't actually see anything if it is not wet. That could definitely be worth a try!

Try goo gone. That stuff works well on grease and wax.

You can clay your windshield regularly and it will get off all the gunk. All that is is road grime, oils, just all the junk that comes up to the road surface during rain.

I use Dow Betaclean Easy Go sponges to clean windshields prior to installing to remove contamination. They can be found on the internet.

But a Magic Eraser is just as good and can be found locally.

Your issue could be caused by poorly applied Rain-X or grease buildup. Without a buffer, a clay bar is a great option. Spray the windshield with soapy water or a lubricant and use the clay bar to remove the residue. Follow up with a good glass cleaner and microfiber towel to get a streak-free finish. For any remaining buildup, a vinegar and water solution can help break it down safely. This should restore the clarity of your windshield.
