The ultimate headlight upgrade H4 (not LED or HID)

I just discovered when you are using High Beams it's disable Low beams.
Anyone using this mode to run High and Low together?

Got flashed for the first time in two years yesterday morning. I did a quick high-0ff mode, and the dude left his on. Wonder how he behaves h the new LED and Jeep bros.

So I have a 96’ Tacoma xtracab, and I just did the swap. Went with headlight services headlight harness (Mr. Mike was a huge help and very nice!!) and got the Hella e-codes with the osram bulbs. Holy crap, what a huge difference, the e-codes provide a awesome light cut off that is very well defined and once the high beams are cut on, well no deer stands a chance hiding on the side of the road!!! 10/10 recommend this upgrade! Spend the extra money and go with headlight services, the harness is sooo well made, and HEAVY DUTY!!!!

 

Does anyone have a schematic to build the headlight service harness? I was going to order one but after conversion the harness will be $270 Canadian, without import fees. I had found a schematic a Tacoma world member designed but it utilizes 4 relays, I believe the headlight service on uses 2 if I am not mistaken.

Trudeau tax I would imagine, or dollar is shit right now it seems. That was a quick google search of the exchange rate, it may not be exactly that but usually is pretty close.

 

Think it was bc the trade agreement went south after the UK vote. I used to get a lot of audio stuff & most of it came in almost duty free. How times have changed. Shipping went up too.

 

So I just completed this last night. Headlight services Harness and Osram Super Bright 100/90w bulbs. Wow. Headlights are actually good now. Great upgrade.

 

Don't forget to check the aiming on them now. If they were a little high before, but bearable for other drivers, they won't be bearable any longer

 

Yea thats the next step. its getting harder and harder finding a flat surface with a wall to aim the lights. Was thinking of using my portable projector screen lol, but its only 6 feet wide.

 

I just drive down the road and use whatever store/restaurant building that doesn't actively have people in the parking lot, a tape measure, and some electrical tape. It's quick and easy and no one generally bothers me for the 15 minutes I'm there.

 

Sorry if this has been covered, this is a huge post and I haven’t combed through in a while. I see Diode Dynamics offers Form Lighting for head light assemblies on their site now as a partner, have you looked at these? Once again, you probably are the best forum poster I have seen. Absolutely amazing thread. crashnurn80 my hat is off to you!! I'm helping my 17 year old work on his 2001 Tacoma and headlights are next. Current OEM lenses are really fogged up and polish did little to improve. He doesn't have a lot of $ for now but would like to upgrade so he can see at night and know when the deer and the elk might cause havoc.

In reading through it looks like the Philips Racing Vision GT200 bulbs will be well worth it. Is there an aftermarket housing that you recommend other than OEM? Another thread recommended

I'm not @crashnburn80, but my son and I installed the Proper headlight upgrade on a few different 1st Gens we've owned and, now, we both have The ultimate headlight upgrade H4 (not LED or HID) on our 2nd Gens. The short answer is that aftermarket optics just don't match OEM. That said, my son and I both had good luck with TYC replacements (

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H8W16G/). The CAPA-certified housings you listed appear comparable and have similar customer ratings. As described in Post 1 and Post 3169, Philips Racing Vision +150 or +200 are among the highest performing stock wattage bulbs on the market.

In our experience, however, nothing beats the Proper/Ultimate Headlight Upgrade. The harness and Osram bulbs are worth every penny especially in areas where wildlife strikes are common. Good luck!

 

Norton-thanks for the response. We've looked at the Ultimate Upgrade via wiring harness and bulbs but he just doesn't have those kind of funds at this point. Curious-what was the all-up costs to do the upgrade including OEM housings?

 

It's also been several years since we last upgraded, and we didn't go with OEM 1st Gen housings, so I can't speak to those. That said, I'd estimate all-in for the housings we used, Proper/Ultimate harness, and bulbs is ~$80 for TYC housings, ~$160 for the harness, and ~$20 for Osram bulbs, bringing the grand total to ~$260.

If money's tight, new housings are the highest priority. The harness and bulbs can come later. Note that higher wattage bulbs (e.g., upgraded Osram) should NOT be used with stock wiring, so stick with stock wattage bulbs until he can do the harness. Stock wattage bulbs can, however, be used with upgraded wiring, so higher wattage bulbs are the last priority.

 

You can get a $50 harness with beefy wire. I ran one in my ‘02 Tundra for a while before swapping to Mike’s nice one.

Voltage booster and AGM are a nice supplemental improvement as well.
