I went through that too. Always a promise of hiring help in the future with no actual timeline but no delivery.

by the time I left it was like the quote "we've done so much with so little for so long we could do anything with nothing"

Have you found a job you're happy with? I've heard a lot of ranch talk lately and not much work talk. That's probably a good sign.

clearing out all the shit from the attic and then going to go through it to hopefully get rid of half of it or more.

This is only about 1/4 of what’s up there.

    IMG_3862.jpg

Ironically, the new house is 3x the size of our current house but the attic is only about 1/3 the size of the one we have now lol. So we need to purge

There's two of us at this gig. I just do my thing and don't pay attention to what she does lol she does good work though.
It's the ol' trying to grow revenue but reluctant to invest the upfront cost of it. I get it, engineers are expensive, burden cost is a lot, but it is necessary to rip the bandaid off, invest early and have a well oil team when the work lands. Seen this in my industry is they wait too late and then you have the chaos of an engineer in training, but those trying to train are drowning trying to make the deadlines and can't be as effective as they should.

I think you're in mechanical engineering, but two well-abused quotes from software engineering probably still apply...

"Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later" and "What one programmer can do in one month, two programmers can do in two months."

There's an art to having the right people (both in quantity and skill) at the right time. I've grown cautious about simply asking for more help, as I don't trust management to get the right help, and allow time for them to get situated. The wrong help at the wrong time only makes life harder.

I feel you we did a purge last summer anticipating the move. I still have 6 totes of truck parts I was hoping to have gone. How big is the garage? Are you going to have storage room in it. As I recall it's tandom, that's always nice for storage.

Good guess ;) while on paper that is what I am, by trade I build electronics, which is a niche industry. I totally hear what you're saying, getting the right people in place is key, even if that means getting them on board early and training them up because they have the right attitude. At this company I'm pretty sure I would have some influence on the hiring, but if the door isn't opened, it won't happen.

One of the reasons I burned out of my last job was I was trying to onboard a customer portfolio, one with potential to be the highest revenue generator at the site, but was given two new engineers, one was good and learned fast. One was new to their role and had no experience to learn on and kept dragging the anchor.

yeah it’s a 3 car garage technically, 2 cars wide but one side goes deeper in. Planning on using it for one of the cars and the rest as storage/working area

That's rough. Working with a talented, enthusiastic young engineer is endlessly satisfying. Working with a confused or unmotivated engineer is impossibly frustrating.

I wish it was more common to have a 90-day (or thereabouts) probationary period with new hires to weed out any mediocrity that sneaks through the interview process. I get that hiring managers are afraid of scaring away potential hires, but I think most people worth hiring would see such an arrangement as positive.
