I know the trail has a slight lift in the front from the factory (1.1" I believe). I intend to do the CMC later this month when I get some downtime. I'm running the stock trail wheels which are just painted OR wheels.

Basically, my question is can I fit 285s (say 285/75r16) without a lift?

You might be able to get away with it but only if you stay on the road, would be my guess.

I have -10mm offset wheels and 1.55” of lift up front. I only needed some minor trimming to fit 285/75/16’s, but that was with an alignment that pushed the tire farther forward to avoid the cab mount.

What's your offset? Near zero will give you the best chance. I did 285s on -10 offset with cmc, stock alignment for 2 years or so.

youl need 3/4" wheel spacers. with those wheels they will rub the upper control arm. they will then clear without needing a cab mount chop.

Since it has not been pointed out, the fact that your truck is a trail edition does not significantly change tire fitment. You are in the same boat as the rest of us.

See tinkerers adventure videos on YouTube for an explanation.

First of all I can't really give you good advice because I didn't try it the way you are asking - What I did do is I went with 285/75R16 to go off road but being paranoid about rubbing on the trail I went with a 2" lift, SPC UCA to be able to get a good alignment and for good measure got a CMC and viper cut - So over kill I suppose but I was also looking to the future thinking about maybe if I ever can afford to get a re-gear (~$3K) I would like to go with 35s (37s are just a fantasy for me) . So If you do decide to get a lift the CMC you are planning on is a good move and really not that expensive. You probably don't need a viper cut when some minor trimming will do but a viper cut is cheap as well - I would have done the viper cut myself but do not trust my cutting skills. Last I have DX4 wheels that have a +10 off set so that helps as well . . . It seems the sweet spot seems to 0 off set from what I can tell from everything I have read and heard but gudujarlson's advice to check out tinkerers adventure videos is spot on . . . . I have learned so much from his videos - he is a mechcanical engineer and really is one of the few Youtube people that I trust on Tacoma topica concerning mods.

Second - what is the trail version of a 3rd gen Tacoma that you refer to that comes with a 1.1" lift ? . . do you mean the TRD lift kit from Toyota?

I don’t think you could really see it in a picture to be honest, it was just about an inch of trimming of the plastic fender in front of the wheel. It only rubbed at one very small spot around like 75% of full lock.

@majpooper i was told the trail has like a 1.1” “lift” in the front due to a longer strut being used in the suspension? Could be I was chasing a moose up a tree but that was my understanding.

On the ‘21 they are! They’re the OR Wheels just painted. They didn’t start the sick special bronze wheels until the ‘22

Measure your hub to fender distance.

Sadly no, now it makes sense why this trail was cheaper than other trails I’d seen lol. Not as good of a deal as I thought I guess.

If you want to know what your current ride height is, the best thing to do is use your trusty tape measure. Measure the distance between the center of your hub to the edge of your fender flare. Do this on all four corners.

Stock/normal is about 21” on the front and 22” on the rear give or take 0.5”.

Posting pictures of your suspension might also be informative.

Regardless this has little or no effect on what tires you can fit.

    Food for thought:

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
If you want “looks” then 285/75R16 and probably rub depending on your Aligment specs. If you want the 33” diameter, functionality and not dealing with bs go for 255/85r16 cheers!

In the same boat. Looking at bilstein 5100 front (2”) and back using stock springs, aal 1.5” in the rear. I have -10 offset wheels I hopefully won’t have to cmc going up to 285/75/16.
