Check Engine Light - AT Temp Sensor

I have a 2004 Tacoma 4X4 V6. My check engine light is on and I was told it was due to the transmission temp sensor.

It was hard to locate but I think I found it. The wires had fused together and I'm assuming shorted out. I managed to separate them but one of the wires broke off.

a few questions:

1 - Is this even the transmission temp sensor that I'm messing with?
2 - Is there any way to replace this without taking a lot of other things out?
3 - I'm reading continuity with my multimeter if I touch both ends of the wire coming out of the sensor. Is this to be expected with these sensors or is that a sign the sensor needs to be replaced.

I tried to splice in a wire to see if the code would go away, it did not.

 

Yes that's the temp sensor for the transmission. You have to remove the hard line that sits in front of it in order to get it out. You won't lose much tranny fluid by doing that, but some will drain out of the lines.

 

Thank you for the info. Do you know the part number for the sensor by chance? I have been searching for it and I can't locate it.

Not having much luck finding the steps on how to remove the hard line either. As simple as unscrewing the bolt at the top and bottom?

 

The best resource to find part numbers is toyodiy.com. Just plug in your VIN and you have to navigate to the part. Once you learn how toyota organizes their parts, it will get easier to find them. You can also search for key words.

For example, I looked at parts for 2004 v6 based on your description. The temp sensor is under electrical>electronically controlled transmission. This is the number I found 89429-35042. You should still plug in your VIN to verify that it is the same.

 

Have you solved it? I have the check engine light on with the code P0713. In my case, my mechanic traced the sensor and couldn't find a cable connected to the sensor. Might've been cut or chewed by a critter. Gonna have to search the electronic diagram to trace the cable to somewhere in the harness. Any suggestions where can I get a new connector?? I have looked in toyodiy but there isn't a part code for cables... idk. Let me know how you solved it. Last code to fix in my taco

That and the site lends itself to give you the part numbers you need, with or without your vin (much easier with).

Pricing is better than most, but only worth buying if you buy multiple items due to shipping costs.

 

I looked at my '99 tranny today looking to replace the sensor, this is a very hard spot to get to with a wrench (see photo), what did you guys use to remove that nut? Crow foot wrench, flex head or some other special extension?

Update for others with similar issues---with the combination of wrenches and flexhead with 3" extension, I was able to remove the transmission line, pulled the senosor and replaced with a new sensor from RockAuto, I had to position myself (head toward the rear of the truck to have my right hand access the sensor clip or use a long nose plier, this alone took about an hour) Would've been helpful to have another person the other side to hold it in place in the sensor clip installation.

Its been about a month and and previous issue has not returned, truck no longer shut off while idling in traffic

I narrowed down to this sensor route knowing with high confident that my tranny and tranny fluid were very healthy, and talking to a few mechanic friends. Saved me a lot of bread and headache. This thread also helps for anyone else--
