The older I get, the less I like recoil and muzzle blast. Young bucks want to hunt everything with cannons, and that’s OK. I was young once. I’ve just learned to appreciate small efficient rounds that still kill just as quickly. I do miss hunting with a 416 Rigby, but am very happy to use a .250 savage and kill everything I want to.

What were you hunting, Grizzly,Kodiak, or Polar bears. I personally wouldn't even want to shoot a .416 Rigby, even when I was young. Now if I had won a hunting safari to Zambia when I was 25 ,well that would be a different story.

I grew up dreaming of Africa, so one of my first rifles was a 375H&H to deer hunt Arkansas. Had several bigger, and used to really like shooting them. Now not so much. I rarely use anything over a 140gr 7mm bullet and usually much smaller.

Plus 1 for 7mm though, I really like .270 also, flat rounds!

Big bores don’t really cause that much damage as they have tough, slow bullets. I did shoot quite a few deer on Kodiak with a 358STA. It put a sizable hole in them.

I’m currently working on my first euro mount. Even after researching how and watching a few videos it’s been a learning experience. I Am at the stage of whitening. I bought the salon Peroxide cream that I saw in several videos. However I saw two different ways of using it. One was to brush it on and let it sit and the other was to simmer in water with the peroxide cream? What is your go to method for whitening?

I use 40% hydrogen peroxide and quick white powder. Mix 50/50 in a glass/pyrex cup till its bout mayonaise consistency. Make sure you are in open area as it does give off some fumes when you mix it.

Apply with foam brush Everything you want whitened. I put it on the underside first then top. Let it sit 24rs rinse off with water.

I’ve done a few Javelina skulls using just over the counter hydrogen peroxide and q-tips and a brush. They came out pretty nice. Not as white as @wilcam47 euro mount but good enough for display. Heads were boiled in a pot and all flesh removed then scrubbed and allowed to dry. Then 3 applications of peroxide.

After seeing @wilcam47 we may be doing it wrong but we make a paste out of peroxide and oxyclean.. brush on with acid brush not touching the antlers, then rinse in water with a touch of oxy clean as well, depending on length you can get super white or keep kind of a bone color

That works too. Ive also tried the oxyclean in water but it eats away the bone too much

Pigs are a bit more work cuz grease in them. Supposed to degrease them then do whitening.

I've still got the first rifle my parents gave me, a Remington Sportsman 74 Auto 30-06 bought from K-Mart in Kernersville, N.C. My son said he wants to shoot a deer with it. I need to dig it out. Still have the box as well.

Found the photos of it. Think they gave it to me Christmas of 1991. I looked the gun up and it was made from 1984 to 1987, I guess K-Mart had a hard time selling them since they had this one in 1991. If you look at the price tag it looks like 7-84 under the top sticker.

Important part of boiling greasy skulls is pour the fat off before removing the skull from the water. If you just lift a hot skull out through the grease it soaks into the bone and is then very difficult to get rid of.
