Hey guys, I have a 2018 Tacoma Trd sport four-wheel-drive and three weeks ago my truck went to the shop for a check engine light and it had a cracked cylinder head and a blown head gasket. Luckily, even though my truck was not under warranty anymore, Toyota has picked up the majority of the bill. My question is when the truck gets out of the shop, Should I trade it in knowing that it had serious engine problems after only 56,000 miles. Is this a defect in the truck that is likely to happen again? The truck did not over heat and was at Toyota within 15 miles of the check engine light coming on.truck is babied and serviced by Toyota since it was bought new. thank you in advance.

Had a shop replaced the coolant during a previous service where they might have overheated it waiting for coolant to circulate?

No. I check the coolant regularly and never dropped below the line.

Did the dealer show you the cracked cylinder head or just tell you?

No.Just told my wife actually. They had her number on file so I haven’t even spoken with them. I have no clue when it comes to cars. This Toyota dealer has always been pretty honest. Been doing business with them 20+ years.

It's getting a new head so you shouldn't have to worry about it happening again if the head had a defect that caused the crack. I'd keep the truck.

I'd definitely run it. If something is going to come up related to the repair, hopefully it will happen soon after and can be addressed by the dealer.
If you're really paranoid about it and want some reassurance, I'm sure your dealer offers extended warranties on their used vehicles that they could price for you. That's probably a better option than buying a new truck due to this one issue.

Hopefully they checked the block for flatness before throwing a new head on. If the block is good you could be in great shape with a new head.

If done correctly, ( it sounds like you have a good dealer ) it should be totally fine , it’s a mechanical thing and stuff happens . Drive it and enjoy
