Holy smokes! Never thought I could like a vehicle as much. We are only a week in and not into the snow season yet but I suspect this thing will be as good as the Outback in the snow.

Here are a couple things I didn’t realize about a Tesla.
    1. Their cruise control [Autopilot] is automatically tied to the posted speed limit and can be set to +/- an actual speed or percentage of the posted limit. No more needing to pay attention and find yourself way over a change in limit and getting a ticket. Happened to me.
    2. Warming up the car in winter only takes a fraction of the time, 3-5 minutes vs 15 minutes.
    3. The defroster or heat can be set, adjusted, or triggered from the app so you don’t need to remember to leave your truck on a particular setting for the next morning.
    4. The built-in navigation is much easier to initiate and is ridiculously smart.
    5. Built-in dash cam that includes 12 cameras. No need to pay and install an aftermarket product.
    6. You are able to view around and inside your vehicle from anywhere.
    7. Can remotely unlock, and re-lock your vehicle to allow someone to get or leave something.

Anyone else have some things they were surprised to find?

This 3rd Gen forums, suppose to be in Off Topic.
But I would never buy EV. Still need outside electric power to charge lithium-ion battery, and my location, no can sustain full EV all over. Also, if EV battery goes, it cost as much as brand new Tesla, or any other EV.

Don't forget the various sounds your Tesla can make when you lock it and walk away, from Fart sound to Goat bleeping.
My spouse has a 2018 Tesla Model 3 since new, it is the only vehicle that so far has been indestructible in her hands.
Make mine a new 2024 4Runner. (Drove a 2006 Tacoma quad cab TRD for 17 years)

My wife also just got a Tesla model-Y. She LOVES it. The acceleration is unbelievable. $37k after rebates, which is about $10k below the average new car price.

To avoid this just being a Tesla-bashing brigading of OP, I do have to give props to Tesla for the camera suite, semi/full self-driving capability, and setting the standard for charging. Especially for those of us that need a commuter car, its a very good solution if you had the ability to have a second off-road/weekend warrior vehicle.

The BIGGEST thing though is the "dealership" experience of Tesla. The fact you can design your tesla and at the cost of wait time, get EXACTLY what you order is nice. Looking at Tacomas, then being subject to the dealership giving you something close-ish, and on their timeframe is super frustrating. Plus then you get to deal with absurd mark-ups, etc.

EV range in general as well as charging solutions don't have a great comparison to speed and ubiquity of gas stations in 2024, but can easily see that changing over time. I'd happily own one if I had a dedicated space to charge it, but being in an apartment again, no dice.

I think as long as you don't try to pretend that EVs are any more environmental (in most cases worse in sum total) than gassers, most people don't have an issue.

I had a Model Y and traded it last winter on a Lightning. Tbh the model Y was probably a better car but I LOVE the Lightning way more.

EV’s are fucking awesome for the right usage in the right situation. I drive about 20k miles year in that truck (fairly long commute) and my work allows me completely free charging so…. I drive 20k a year for nothing….

in addition to be extremely economical for me it’s insanely fun to drive. Almost 600hp close to 800 ftlbs of torque and 0-60 in sub 4 seconds….

Now as my only vehicle? Ha no way! I also have a 2023 F350 Tremor with a 7.3L Godzilla that hauls my truck camper and handles trips. My wife also has a RAV4 Adventure that we can take on trips if we think charging would be a problem.

All and all EV’s have a place and make a great option in the right circumstance. Definitely shouldn’t be forced down peoples throats however.

In my years of EV ownership ship I have t found charging to be much of a challenge but I definitely don’t use it for remote trips.

Cost wise my Lightning was $75k sticker price with $7500 federal rebate, $500 state rebate and when I bought mine Ford has them another $12k off so out the door before tax and tags it was $55k. Not cheap but it’s a really nice vehicle.

EV haters can hate but as an absolute vehicle enthusiast they are a fucking riot to own and drive and I’ll probably always have one around as my daily driver. As and added bonus not being reliant on foreign oil is a nice feeling.

And the big dog. This was at the Northern most point in Maine a couple months ago. Not somewhere an EV could dream of venturing.

All I can say after 3 hurricanes this year is don't get any EV (or hybrid) in salt water. Not only will they burn down, they'll take the house they are parked in or cars next to them with them.

Don't expect to go far or recharge the EV version for a while after the storm

Using an EV to evacuate is risky businesses due to creeping traffic jams and lack of charging stations

But yes, they can be an excellent choice in specific situations. Personally I'd consider a the right hybrid, but probably not an EV

I’d love to get a lightening long range. I just do not have the charging capability in my garage. Dang sub panel is rated for 50 amps and the HVAC takes up most of that.
