As the title states I am swapping out my old 4.0 v6 with 400k km on it with a scrap yard engine at 200k due to a blown head gasket and burning oil.

While I have the truck apart that far I plan to replace my engine mounts, tensioner pullies, and cooling system (Hoses, thermostat, waterpump)

Any suggestions of other things I should do while I am this deep into the truck?
    Thanks

Flip the bolts that bolt in the steering rack. From the factory the bolts come in from the top requiring you to move the engine to remove them. There is nothing stopping you from bolting it in from the bottom making the job a lot easier. (If thats not clear the nuts need to be on top)

However with that many miles i'd not be surprised if the rack has already been replaced. Last time I did one I cut the bolt and just replaced it with new and went from the bottom up.

Change the radiator as well. That engine should have been fine for another 200km. Something else must have been "off".

I did in fact replace the rack myself about 50k km ago. That is in the clear

I was driving out of town this summer and overheated due to a faulty radiator cap. Didnt realize it at the time but that started a long few months full of problems that turned out to be a blown gasket :(
I was questioning replacing the radiator just because while I was there as rock auto should have them pretty cheap anyways

I am not a fan of replacing the radiator if it's not showing problems. They aren't hard to replace if they start showing problems. And with todays parts reliability you are better off not "fixing" it if it ain't broken.

Now this is a good idea, Id hate to have to be back here in 200k with a leaking seal in this location. Been there done that and DO NOT want to have to deal with that

Many shops get $150 to do a "flush".

A rad cost $135. Why not eliminate a possible issue. They are easy to change.

Make sure the timing chain cover has no leaks, or isn't seeping oil before you put it in or just put a new one on while it's out of the truck!

“While you’re in there” can get expensive. I’d just make sure all usual leaks are addressed and install it. Rear main is a no brained while it’s easy to get to.
