How to start working as work truck?

Hey guys, I have 3.5 V6.

I am planning to resign from my current job in IT field because well, too many ass kissing snakes.

Anyway, I want to use my taco to carry some loads around until I find a job. I am looking for any advice i can get, ive hauled some weight before but the main thing is how do i get into the business? Like people renting you to carry stuff from one location to another. Or working for a company for limited amount of months.

Find a job before you resign, would be better. Nobody is hiring other than retail during this time of year.

What "stuff" are you gonna carry? Not many work trucks are built on Tacoma's other than the bug catchers.

You will need to have a cap to keep your stuff in there and locked up.

 

Did you forget about pool cleaners? Tacoma is like #1 truck for pool guys.

look up local courier and hotshot delivery services and talk to them. some do enclosed vans and front seat sized deliveries. At one point i was using an app called ELFS to have stuff delivered. I've done uber, uber eats and uber delivery. You have to put in 10-12 hours to actually clock close to 8 driving and its not good money, it was more of an emergency while i was between jobs.

 

Make money doing junk removal in landfills.

A taco short box, if that is what you have, is not ideal for such a job. You could however buy a trailer.

 

Out of the 100s of hotshot drivers I deal with where I work only drive F350/F450s or Ram 2500/3500s. Very few Chevys and very very few Sprinters. Never seen a Tundra or Taco being used for Hotshot driving.

 

And the Tacoma isn’t that great as a tow rig

 

I was thinking maybe medical services. I am already part of the red cross, but that probably needs more clearance and probably special equipment.

I just want to use my bed and rear seat, wont be getting trailer likely.

 

The capacity will be very limiting to what jobs you can take.

 

The million mile Tacoma guy did deliver cancer related medicine or medical products, if I remember correctly. Not sure how to get into that business though.

 

A short box taco is better at towing than hauling stuff in the 5’ bed, wouldn’t you say?

In any case, a trailer increases the hauling capacity of any truck or non-truck.

 

Parlay your IT skills into another IT job. There are both corporate and niche opportunities that will pay better and provide benefits that being a 'hauler' will never match.

You're not going to have solid medical insurance working independent

Every job in any field in every place will always have the kissers and the snakes. The key is 2 fold. Finding a place with less (better leadership being a important part) and learning how to deal with them.

I work in IT as well and I have a few times thought it would be nice to take sabbatical and work outside for the DNR or something.

Agreed. But at least that's a job with decent benefits options.

Problem with IT sabbaticals of meaningful duration is falling behind on ever-changing tech knowledge.

 

You aren't wrong, the 2 main trucks I use for my deliveries are 1ton dodges, but when i have small stuff, something that is small enough that being palletized doesn't make sense they'll send out a van or a small truck.
I need a run from the 1 tons 2-3 times each per day and a van or other maybe twice a week and its usually when we screw up and miss the UPS truck and I need something taken 2-300 miles right then.

 

You can probably carry some stuff from TJ to SD if you were inclined lol
