PSA turn off PDA? - Proactive Driving Assist

Is anyone else planning on turning off the PDA -- Proactive Driving Assist -- on your new Tacoma when the snow flies?

We are getting some snow flurries in MN today, and although I like how the system brakes for me in traffic, etc., I'm thinking it may be a very bad thing to have the truck automatically hit the brakes when the road is covered in snow/ice.

Am I right in this thinking, thoughts?

Adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, etc., aren’t meant to be used in the rain or snow where precipitation can obscure the sensors. With snow there may also be crap on the roads that the system could potentially misconstrue as an obstacle.

Mine tells me it’s unavailable if it’s raining or snowing heavily.

 

This isn't cruise control, this is the new TSS 3.0 PDA -- brakes even when you aren't using the cruise. You have to go into the settings and manually turn it on or off, there is no button on the steering wheel or dash to simply turn it on or off. I believe it is on by default from the factory.

 

Adaptive cruise control and PCB are part of the same system.

I’ve never read that you’re supposed to leave it on during snow or heavy rain, when accumulating debris on the sensors, especially during snowfall, can causes them to malfunction. And heavy rain play hell with cruise control and PCB.

Do manufacturers now want us to leave the systems on?

 

Is this why my truck slammed on the brakes when I was backing into my garage last night? It's a tight fit, and I need to get basically right up to the back wall. It was beeping a lot, then suddenly stopped me about 8 inches short and scared the shit out of me. I meant to research why but hadn't got to it yet.

 

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said, but I'm talking about the new braking system on the 2024's. It will automatically brake for you if the car in front of you brakes when the cruise control is off.

 

Yes, my 2022 also has pre-collision braking which is independent of the cruise control. It works with cruise control when you engage cruise control but it’s also active in the background if you’re just puttering around town. I get error messages that it’s unavailable during heavy rain and snowfall.

 

That's yet another system which can be turned off in the settings if you like!

This is different than pre-collision -- this is more like adaptive cruise control without having adaptive cruise control on.

OP is talking about Proactive Driving Assist, which is last on the list. Interesting feature, I'd never heard of it before this thread.

I'd say, if you feel the truck braking and turning for you while you're driving normally, then I would turn it off.

Personally, I would leave PCB on, though, because that should only react if you've missed something. I've only had it come on in the 4Runner once (when I wasn't paying attention), and the sensitivity should be adjustable anyway.

I don't like the features that try to take control (like lane keeping assist, and this PDA apparently), but I think the reactive features that come in after I've missed something are helpful, even if it's just for damage control at that point.

Yes, you explained that much better than I! I agree, PCB is there if you already are SOL. PDA is actually super nice when the pavement is dry, but I think it would be a bit sketchy when it gets slick out!

 

I would think the system does not need to be switched off for weather. The Tacoma is not the first Toyota with TSS 3.0 so I would think the feature operates without unexpected interventions without shutting it off during weather.

 

When system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle’s camera and radar, Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) * provides...steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian or bicyclist.

I've noticed this one at least a couple times already, when approaching pedestrians or cars parked a bit into the road. It's a very gentle nudge of the wheel. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet.

Apparently the one that surprised me when backing into the garage was "Parking Assist with Automatic Braking".

This thing is like driving a goddamn UFO compared to my 2016.

 

I think my Park assist has kicked on twice while parking in busy areas with pedestrian around the back of my truck. Both times were not needed and not pleasant.

 

they aren’t talking about pcb, they are talking about pda which applies some braking for you in normal traffic . I hated the assisted sensation and disabled it on the test drive. Now my dealership has them defaulted off on the lot because people were complaining.

it is not the same as precollision braking and I can assure you your ‘22 does not have this feature as I traded in a ‘22 myself to get my 4th gen

 

mine did this 4x today slammed the ebrake on while i was backing up with a trailer hitch bike rack. Slammed the Ebrake on while I was backing into the garage from in front of the garage with no seat belt. And slammed the ebrake on while moving my trailer out of the way. If you figure out how to turn that off let me know.

It's PKSB (p332 in manual). Disable in settings.
This has happened to me a couple of times, but I don't want to disable it because I'm a hazard in parking lots
