Watcha wearing?

Which doesn't that speak to the power of a luxury brand? Rolex is a brand of luxury, they aren't making hundred-dollar watches and so you can wear that brand and logo and its associated with luxury. You can't do that and expect the same with a brand of watch making cheap and expensive watches.

They are big in Japan and just because they make a quality product doesn’t mean they can get a share of the luxury market elsewhere, especially the US.

This was one of the reasons why they were reluctant to bring the brand over to the US, ironically most of the models that watch autists specifically wanted and brought over from Japan or bought gray they promptly discontinued when they came here.

 

Isn't this the backstory to why Toyota made Lexus? They wanted a piece of the luxury market and knew if they did it under the Toyota brand, they wouldn't attract the customer they were after, so they made a company to do it.

 

I think the price point of the starter Seiko brings the word cheap into the conversation, maybe not the quality of the product!

 

Let's rename Grand Seiko under a new name and we have solved the issue haha.

 

The Japanese manufacturers always have had high-end models they sold in Japan but they were afraid of selling in the US at a price premium unless they were perceived to be luxury goods. So they created luxury brands for the US market. To this day, they’ve had mixed results as luxury brands.

 

Maybe, but even among the Swiss manufacturers there are brands that people pay a premium for and other manufacturers that make a superior product that barely get recognized.

 

Correct. I buy watches for me, and because I like the specific features of XYZ watch, but I'm not going to pretend (especially working in my line of work where $$$ watches are a thing) that having some level of elevated status doesn't play into it.

Grand Seikos are incredibly well made and feature rich, but like discussed above, just don't carry that same level of reputation vs a Rollie Sub, etc in terms of "luxury brand", which let's be honest is half the reason we buy anything more than a Timex functionally.
