They are just generally associated with the cheaper options of the Weller line, SR and 12 are usually the only screw tops

 

I inquired at buffalo trace and they dance around the response. They wont make a claim about a cork at all actually and just say it's a marketing decision not a statement about quality or value

For what it's worth, the Smokeye Hill was the hottest drinking and least smooth of the 3 but very flavorful. To me; the 13th Colony was the best. I'd compare it to a much more expensive bottle.
