Hey everyone, I am brand new to TW so if there is a better place for this thread just let me know.

I just bought a 2006 Double Cab Short Bed SR5 V6 PreRunner TRD Off Road (a crazy mouthful) last week and I love it already! I decided not to exclusively look for a 4x4 because I wanted to prioritize a truck in good condition with the budget that I had and I don’t NEED 4x4 where I live (even though I would have preferred a 4x4).

I also used to make fun of “off road” packages on 2WD trucks so I wasn’t specifically looking for a TRD Off Road but the one I found was a gem for the price and I think it’s cool to have the locking rear diff, bed power adapter, skid plate, etc.

I like to go camping and do some light off roading to get there and I have no doubt the truck will handle that fine (especially with good tires). I simply am curious to hear from people that have PreRunner TRD Off Roads what off roading have y’all done? To what extent have you gone off road and how did it handle? I just want to know the limits y’all have found.

I tried looking for a thread like this and couldn’t find one but I could have easily missed it.

    Thanks for the input!

It depends on where you off-road. You can do OK on unimproved dirt roads as long as they aren't too steep and are dry. Dry desert areas are pretty easy as long as the sand isn't too soft.

Back in the 1970's I did surprisingly well in a 1969 Firebird to get me into some hunting spots. But after buying a 4X4 in 1976 I've not looked back. Where I live off road means dirt. And if it rains dirt turns to mud.

These photos were taken on Forest Service ROADS. Not offroad. This is what happens when snow and cold freeze the dirt and it later thaws. Normally any car could pass these spots.

Prerunners are great for driving off road but not offroading("wheeling"). You couldn't get much more out of a 2WD truck. Instead of trying to get stuck, avoid getting stuck. Only used the rear locker a couple times. Once on I-8, San Diego County,in a blizzard.

Thanks for the notes. All of that makes sense. Again, I’m really only planning on light off roading here and there but y’all pointed out some helpful limitations.

I’ll report back with how it did when I take it off the pavement (hopefully soon).
