Recently bought a 2022 TRD Pro. I’ve had about a week or so it was messing around with it playing with all the buttons. One the features I don’t really care about one way or the other is the rear sliding glass. I tried to engage it and it sounds like the motors running, but nothing is happening. I started looking more into the glass and it appears someone has swapped it out for a plain old manual rear slider. Looks like they did a good job putting it in, but why would someone not just put in another factory glass? I looked online and they appear to be around $300 for a Toyota glass so it couldnt be much more than the manual one they put in.

I’m thinking The original owner broke the glass and just had a local glass guy pop in a manual one.

If they had stopped working, I would think they would’ve just taken it in under the warranty and had it fixed. That’s why I think it got broken

    Thoughts?

Warranty would not cover someone breaking their back window. You are probably correct they had it replaced with the cheapest possible option.

If you bought it from a dealer/certified used you might have the right to complain that it wasn't disclosed

One less thing to break later. If your luck is like mine. The motor would go out when the window was open. And then you’d really have a problem.

I’d be perfectly fine with a manual window. I never use mine. If a solid window was cheaper, that’s what I’d throw in it if ever had to replace it.

If it were my truck I'd just drive it. My 07 has a manual sliding rear window that has never been opened in the 17 years I've owned it. My 14 F150 has an electric sliding rear window that has been opened maybe twice.

But I do understand the frustration. Knowing the window didn't work wouldn't have kept me from buying the truck if I were in your shoes. But knowing it didn't work could have been leveraged to get a little better price.

Yeah we’ll probably never know, but could’ve been the reseller “fixing” it the cheapest possible way.
The little window is a gimmick, and other than risking further damage using it to haul longer loads, it’s of no use to me. I use my electric one a couple times a year to keep it moving,,, if that’s even thing I dunno.
I’m not anti tech, but this one case I’d just leave it.

It'd be shame if a rock from the road were to break it, and your insurance had to replace it with a power slider

Could have been an availability issue at the time i.e. either wait two weeks with a plastic bag over the hole, or swap in a 2nd gen manual glass on the same day from a salvage yard.

What's the cheapest window to replace?
If I locked my keys in the truck and didn't know how to get them out otherwise.
The cheapest window would be getting broke into.:notsure:

Thanks for all the replies. Part of me wants to just leave it alone. Another part of me would rather have the correct glass put in. Of course that could lead to other problems. I’ll think on it for a while and figure out how I want to proceed. Again, thanks everyone!!!

Door window, which is DIY friendly to replace.

I have had the center sliding glass open probably less than five times in the three+ years I have owned my Tacoma. I have a double cab and I might use it more if I could just reach back there and open it. I would much prefer a one piece rear window and would never separately order the slider as an option. (I think it was part of the SR5 package at the time.) A couple of times I have opened it and zoned and forgot about the leaves and crap in the bed, and guess what happened?
    :annoyed:

My son has an access cab. The window is a short reach and he has it open fairly frequently in the warm months.

I use my slider daily and it is open more than the door windows. I would put the right parts back in my truck that the previous owner was too cheap to do themselves.

I hear ya. Seems like whoever did the install did a good job. However not happy the last guy cheaped out on a $50k sticker priced truck. Fortunately, it appears the glass on the Toyota website isn’t terribly expensive (round $300). Probably need a regulator as well because I was peeking back there a little bit and it appears they just cut the two cables running from it. Classy.

I use the rear slider 6 month a year. A perfect window to leave cracked open to keep temps lower in the summer.

Fix it right, it is a boss feature for a double cab truck.

I would get the dealership involved, even if they didn’t know, they might help you pay for fixing it.

You may not know if there’s anything else wrong with the window or motor that made the previous owner swap it out for a manual slider.

IMG_9590.jpg IMG_9584.jpg Well, I started nosing around more behind the rear seat and peeked up under the carpet. Oh boy! Found some broken glass on the driver side and a red clip on the passenger. I assume the red clip is to hold the back panel on. Supposed to be a Gold Certified truck. I think I will talk to the dealership. I think this needs put right. Yes, a used truck but…cmon.
