One clarification about DA/ SA, just to restate the point.
Many hammer semi-autos will have a long, (comparatively) heavy double action pull for the first shot.
Unless you manually cock the hammer first.
Subsequent shots will be SA with a lighter pull, since the hammer is now already cocked.

Some semis, such as the Colt 1911A1 and Browning Hi-Power are SAO (single action only).
You gotta cock the hammer for the first shot, if it isn't already being carried "cocked and locked".
When fired, it recocks itself, of course, cuz semi-auto

It's worth repeating that you'll shoot better and more consistently with a handgun that fits in your hand comfortably.

The SA/DA will also get cocked if you rack a round into it --> SA mode
You wound need a decocker [or be very careful] to drop the hammer on an unfired cartridge

My favorite handgun, and the one I shot best, by far, was a Taurus 92.
To my lasting regret, I sold it.

It was a straight copy of the original Beretta 92, with decocker on frame, not the slide.
Made on brand new Beretta tooling, in Brazil, along with the Brazilian military contract guns.
Taurus was born from this deal between Beretta and Brazil, BTW.

The Beretta 92 was the handgun that really cemented the popularity of SA/ DA autoloaders.
Striker fired handguns are the thing now, but to my mind, they're by no means better.
    Simpler, yes.

One thing about striker fired guns:
I keep mine in a holster [with retention] and have no problem dropping it in my purse when need be; the lack of a hammer means dumb shit won't happen and the retention on the holster means it won't slip out and cause dumb shit either

    Nice

My trapshooting buddy, a retired cop, carried a SIG 220 in .45 ACP
To me, that was a close second to the Beretta /Taurus 92s

One of my quotes to live by, "the ONLY stupid question is the one you think but don't ask." You're a smart young lady, you'll find the right pistol for you, because you know your level of knowledge and are asking the questions.

No bad info thus far. Just absolutely make sure its unloaded if you dry fire and always point in a safe direction. Most modern pistols its safe to dry fire. Rim fire .22 may or may not be ok to dry fire depends manufacturer.

The nice things about Springfield is its striker fired, has Glock trigger safety, 1911 grip safety, Sig take down (for field strip cleaning)design, chambered indicator and firing pin charged indicator.

One thing on SA pistol is i wouldnt use for CCW pistol for a novice such as yourself, you may not feel comfortable Concealed carrying with hammer cocked. @Gen1TacoLady also if you are concealed carrying you need to carry with 1 round already chambered. As Ted Nugent would say "locked, cocked, ready to rock!"

@Gen1TacoLady just dropped off some mementos of her Scotland trip to Caithness.
    Two coasters and a booklet.
    How nice of her.

Some of you may recall that I mentioned the Scottish origin of my Mother's family.
Caithness, the northernmost tip of mainland Scotland.
