Does anyone rotate their tires at home? Can it be done with one jack and two jack stands? Was thinking about trying it by jacking up the front and getting a jack stand underneath one corner and then jacking up the back and getting a second jack stand under the opposite corner to get opposite corners up in the air so I can swap tires but not entirely sure if itll work or if its too sketchy.

    Any thoughts?

If you use two jack stands and a jack you can only do two wheels at once front or back or left side or right side, at least that is the safest method. Obviously using a jack as a jack stand isn't the safest method.

I guess the safest method would be to jack the back and swap the rear tires, then jack the front and swap the front tires, and then come in from the sides and swap the front and rear on each side to get the proper rotation done. Seems tedious but better than dropping my truck on an axle...

I rotate at home one side at a time with the precautions mentioned above.

As a matter of fact, when I get new tires I always loosen and retorgue all lug nuts to spec also at home. I always feel better that I torqued all lug nuts than someone else.

If your working area is flat and you trust your jack long enough to work at one spot while you swap the tire, then you can easily do it with a jack and 2 stands

    • Jack up the rear axle and set on stands
    • Move the jack to the front and place on the dedicated jack point
    • With the whole front end up in the air, you can move all 4 tires around.
Not the safest approach but if you keep your body outside the vehicle it’s not very dangerous either. I can easily get the tire up there and 2 lugs started, so I’m not scared. You can also use 4 jack stands to be more stable, but it will take longer and the frame locations aren’t always easy to put jack stands on.

If you don’t have a flat work space, then you need to park uphill, chock the fronts and let the vehicle rest on them, then pull parking brake, jack up rear and put it on stands, then jack up the front one side at a time and shuffle the tires around one at a time.

or you can use the spare to put in place of
The first removed tire and swap one corner at a time, jacking each corner up as you swap. That takes the longest by far.

I rotate my own tires at the house using the spare tire. Pull a tire off replace with spare than repeat until all 4 have been rotated. Impact wrench makes it easy to do.

I do front to back and back to front one side at a time. I am happy with how my tires wear and feel secure having the two opposite side tires on the ground when rotating the other side.

Others on TW may prefer different rotating patterns so whatever floats your boat.

That’s the ghetto way I used to do it with my old Land Cruiser. The only problem is you have to tighten and re-tighten your nuts one extra time and not get lazy about it. I ended up breaking a stud because I was either lazy or forgetful. I guess that’s better than having a truck full on you.

Just did it the other day with two stands on the rear axles and a jack for the front. The 1st gen manual recommends style "A" rearward cross for 4x4. Had to kick the tires a fair bit to get them to loosen. Seemed fine, but I guess it doesn't fail till it does.

I do mine all the time using two floorjacks on a very level driveway. Jackstands are smart, but I don't always use them, depending on how I am rotating the tires. (wheels are off and back on in a few seconds usually. With air tools, the process only takes 10 minutes, and I am old and slow.

I would not recommend using the two jack method if you are working on a sloped surface though. It just wouldn't be safe. Bottom line is always make sure your situation is safe. If it feels questionable, figure out a better way, or don't try it. Oh, and as others have already mentioned, always chock your wheels. :D

Are people that opposed to a 5 tire rotation? Just buy a matching wheel/tire and do a 5 tire reward cross you poors…

owners manual recommends front to back and back to front. (drivers front swapped with drivers rear; passenger front swapped with passenger rear)

I've done it with one jack under the frame by the front door and one jack under the rear leaf spring bolts, but don't recommend that method.

Just put a jack stand under the frame by the front door and another one under the rear axle. Chocking wheels is good advice.
