My Tacoma has started making this odd clunk when stopping and hitting bumps and it sounds like possibly the rear differential It constantly does it when stopping in reverse quickly.

One other weird thing I had was it felt like I had a transmission shudder for a second at 40mph then it went away it has never done that before and hasn’t done it since. What would cause that.

Check your steering shaft for looseness. Buddy with a 2009 has one that clunked like crazy and was hard to pin down.

Had a similar thud when going from forward to reverse and vice versa. Turned out to be the bolts for the lower control arm.

if leaf spring bushings wear out it could cause axle wrap and a shudder like a torque converter shudder
