Roof looks like it survived well enough! Happy to see that. Those rounds are nearly perfect for firewood. I'm sure you can rent a lot splitter... Unless the arborist took the wood.

 

I can't see any punctures. There are a few depression areas though. May have dodged a bullet.

@BossFoss what size were those SCS wheels? 17s?

 

Anyone have any good ideas on a studded snow tire to run? I was running cooper discovery M+S tires with studs and they were great. But no longer made.

I'm half leaning at getting some Kenda RT tires and studding them. They just don't make a size that works great unless I get 17" wheels.

 

A lot of the studded tires are off the market now because most states have restrictions or bans on them at this point.

 

For good reason....

 

Is it because they don't work? Or because they work too well and tear up the pavement?

I've never run them myself. And don't think I ever would. Way too loud.

 

IMO a good studless winter tire will outperform any studded tire.



I miss my WRX with Yokohoma iceguards. That thing was unstoppable in the snow and ice. Volvo with Blizzaks wasn't far behind either.

 

A couple pieces, one is tire chemistry, specifically rubber compounds have a come a long way int he last 30 years and can put perform age old studded tires. The other aspect is the damage to infrastructure. They absolutely eat through road surfaces. I will admit there are fring cases where they might have an advantage and be useful but those are only a couple days a season, and so for the rest of the time, from Oct to April (in Idaho) they are just doing damage.

 

The thing studs help with more than any tire compond is deep snow. They dig through hard pack drifts much better and if you have a semi agressive tire that cleans out better it just works better than a studless tire. I'll admit, most my driving Id be fine without studs. But the few times a year where I have to break out of work to get home, the studs are super important.

I still only buy studded for devins car too.

 

M+S tires can't hold a candle to a true winter tire.
I have a set of studded winter tires and I can't say for certain if the studs are worth it or not. Once they wear down they turn to skates.

Even 3peak rated tires vary considerably in performance. The ones on my Sequoia are pretty terrible in the snow despite the 3peak rating. Their tread is more of a passenger all terrain than what I would consider for a quality snow tire. I'll eventually find a cheap set of oem take offs for a winter tire and have a more aggressive all terrain for summer on it. Two sets of wheels is the way to go.

I do live in an area where there is a ton of black ice so I wanted the studs.

 

Yeah I deal with ice a lot on the highways as the hills shadow the roads a lot so ice stays for a long time.

I was impressed with the Kendas in the snow on my other truck. To the point that adding studs to them would make them a crazy good winter tire I think.

 

Studs are intended for ice, the thought is like the claws winter ice climbers use, they can dig into ice. Everywhere else, they serve no use. A dedicated winter studless tire is the way to go.

I was shocked at how good the HT tires on the truck performed. Wouldn't have thought it by looking at them but during a snow storm last year I was driving circles around cars and trucks stuck in the road, tons of grip where trucks with ATs were stuck. Made me realize I don't know shit for tread design for snow

Well deal with plenty of ice. My "favorite" road condition is when a bit storm comes and plows run but it freezes and then snows again and they run again. So now the road is a smooth sheet of snow/ice the entire way. Then the sun comes out juuuuust a bit and melts the top layer down only for it to freeze again. Ice rink driving for everyone!
