Possible to kill power to the abs system but keep the electronic brake booster powered? Or do they both tie into the ecu?

Difference between the system in automatic trucks vs manual (mine's a stick)?

Agree with OP, my 3rd gen 4runners abs was absolutely horrible. First snowstorm in ny i slid across a 3 way intersection into a ditch, all the while the systems bangin-and-clangin like a 5 alarm fire, headlights dimmed down to barely on etc. About needed to replace the seat. I mangled the fuse for the abs and its been fine ever since. Lots of snowy ny winters, and crosscountry winter drives through montana and idaho with no problems since.

But I'm a brake pedal pumper...

Without ABS, when the tires lock up you are now sliding on 4 rubber pads. Turning the steering wheel does nothing. You'll stop whenever you stop.

ABS allows the front wheels to keep spinning, which means you still have some semblance of steering control. ie, you can theoretically steer around something in the road instead of slamming into it

Off road in deep snow, yea it is annoying and overeacts. On the highway on compact snow? Sharing the road with other drivers? ABS should be enabled and working. If your ABS is constantly going off on compact snow you either need to slow down or get better tires

didn’t you read the posts above? OP is a better driver, and can steer while locked up and keep his steering functional in a skid

I can only imagine the good time an insurance company lawyers would have with this in an accident.

OP, I'd just try it as is. Then try a short press of the TC button. Then try a long press and see the difference each mode makes. Then use your best judgement.

The consensus in all the research I've done on this topic is that insurance will pay out. They only won't cover if it's proven you are doing something MALICIOUS or with "intent", not just negligence. I've researched it a ton due to my constant use of my truck way past my GVWR. Obviously I'm not a lawyer, but that's what I've found. Otherwise everyone getting in a wreck while using a cell phone wouldn't be covered, and every drunk driver's insurance wouldn't pay out.

Not sure why you would wanna turn it off…

I live in Prince George and find ABS useful.

And throw a little weight in the back too.

I really like my Leer canopy because not only does it secure my gear but it gives me the equivalent of a few sandbags without taking up bed space

I had to pull the ABS fuse on my ‘97 4Runner many years ago because it was dangerous in certain conditions that I kept finding myself in. Stopping on unplowed snow was an issue, instead it would make the noises but fail to slow down enough, usually ending up with me pulling the e-brake and sliding sideways to stop. Pine needles and leaves would often confuse it too. ABS disabled and pumping the pedal is much more effective in that 27 year old truck. I’ve saved myself and/or the truck several times over the years by pulling the fuse. Another situation was descending steep rocks, sometimes the ABS couldn’t or wouldn’t hold the weight of the truck back (as much as me holding the pedal hard can without ABS), and it made me roll down things way faster than I wanted to. So I made a conscious choice to possibly reduce my stopping distance on dry pavement a bit, as a trade off to avoid crashing in more extreme situations.

My Tacoma is a different animal altogether and of course much newer. I’ve never found myself ever wanting to disable the ABS in the 3 years I’ve had it. It’s much more refined than my old 4runner. Granted I haven’t been nearly as hard on the Tacoma, but it has seen a lot of snow and the ABS has always worked good for me in every situation so far. It seems to a lot less sensitive than some vehicles I’ve driven.

So i just finish my drive on Highway 2 and highway 1 from Edmonton to B.C. some snow and ice conditions i didnt have any problems but was conscious of my ABS . i did have it bind up at a stop sign once tho . i have sand bags and a gear box. lots of weight . still wouldnt mind running without ABS just to see what happens . i think i would be happier .

My understanding is unplugging a wheel speed sensor is the only real way to disable ABS but you will also lose all traction control, etc...... Kind of suprised no one has wired in a switch to do this yet but there may be some annoying side effects.

im hearing the best hack would be disable the pump . if thats possible . i have my mechanic doing research on it that way you can wire in a switch to turn it on and off at will in the city its a real treat sliding thru stop signs.
