Who is using what brand of oil filter? I can't go oem, I'd like to change the oil tomorrow. I'm at 1900 miles and my last decent day is tomorrow.

I will be using mobil1 0w20 extended performance and plan to change again at 5k to 7k intervals.

At 5k OCI for M1 EP, any filter will be more than adequate.

Can't go OEM? Why not? Just curious...

I picked up a M1 before I realized that the local Walmart's and parts stores carry the Toyota filters. The nearest dealership was pretty far away, so I am happy to be able to pick up a Toyota filter near my house.

It's only for the initial change. Plus, the extended performance is a whole 2 bucks more for 5 quarts, so why not. I'll decide what interval I'll do after the first change. I'll probably do every 7k honestly, oil is cheap.

Don't forget the drain plug gasket. Dorman 095-156CD if you don't have time to order a batch of the Toyota gaskets.

We dont see any metal in first oil changes, 5000 miles is still considered "early" and thats all I suggest on any Toyota.

I encourage 5-8,000 mile intervals, but any sooner is just throwing money away typically.

The mobil 1 filter will work fine, honestly a fram works fine, as long as its name brand. It's not a porsche.

No quibble with this argument. I was curious the price gap between a "cheap" Porsche and an expensive Tacoma.

Agree but I'm more talking engine tolerances and sensitivity. Cylinder pressure is much less in a Tacoma lol.

I hate 4th gen tacoma because of price, its great in every other aspect.

Toyota has been using that on 4 bangers for years. We got a '23 Camry that uses the same oil filter so it's super easy to keep stock in my inventory.

Even with a turbocharger you think that long would be fine ?

One would need to do several oil analysis done to see how long or short one can do. There's so many variables out there, not to mention opinions. I do mine every 6 months which equals to about 4,000 miles. I follow this on just about every vehicle. Got one that might see 2,000-3,000 in that time, but oil is cheap and I'm kinda fanatical about it. :anonymous:

Me too I’m planning every 6months after I purchased my truck or 3k miles and it comes out to be the same. Had my truck since June 29th and only have 2600 miles

I build a lot of engines (Ford V8's) and I always dump the break-in oil after I run the engine on a test stand for about 30 to 60 minutes. There is a lot of junk in that first oil dump. All of the assembly lube, any leftover stuff from when the block was machined, and that fine metalic dust that is created during the initial break-in when rings and bearings are seating. A freshly built engine is very tight, but once started up, you can hear it loosen up as the rings seat. All that "tightness" ends up somewhere...

I don't see anything at all wrong with an initial oil change. And then falling into a 5-7K interval. That actually seems perfect.

And for those concerned that I am throwing my money away, maybe I have more of it than you do. I don't play golf, buy expensive clothes, go on expensive vacations, etc. And I pretty much build, fix, scrouge, rebuild, repurpose and reuse whenever I can, so I don't spend a lot on stuff.

If I want to spend $30 or $40 changing my oil, because I enjoy doing it and it makes me feel good, then that is my business. I sure would not tell you how to spend your money.

Oh, and Bishop84 - my last comment was not aimed at you. I just noticed that there are a LOT of the "you're just throwing money away" comments on every thread that includes oil changes. Those comments just kind of get under my skin...

LOL, I remember back in the 70's and 80's I would change oil every 3,000 miles. Finally moved on to changing it every 5,000 miles. Now Toyota says every 10,000 is fine. Maybe, with new synthetic oils it would be fine. But I'm old school and will just stay with the 5,000, to me it's cheap insurance, plus I change it myself so I know it's done correctly, Refuse to pay dealership $125 to such a simple chore.
