Just wondering if anyone on here were former 4Runner owners that got a 2024 Tacoma?

I currently have a 2015 4Runner Trail Premium which I've updated but really like the new interiors on the Tacoma. I also am interested in the hybrid for the low end torque. So if there are any 4Runner owners out there please let me know how you feel after buying the new Tacoma. Especially your thoughts on the new interiors.

I have both. They are very different. I’d recommend a long test drive.

Do you just like the new interior or are you looking for a truck? If it’s just looking for the new interior, the 2025 4Runner is identical to the 4th gen Tacoma inside. it will also have the same powertrain options.

I’m looking at both the new Tacoma and 4Runner and can use both for outdoor activities and such.

I think you'll find most 5th gen 4Runner owners, at least newer year model owners, will be reluctant to part with their tried and true 5th gen. The 6th gen 4R is yet to be released, and unlike a lot of 3rd gen Tacoma owners, they feel the 5th gen, although in its 15th year, is worth hanging on to.

Those in need of a truck might buy a 4th gen Tacoma, but probably not trade or sell their 4R.

That's not to say some might go for what's shiny and new. That happens often.

A cousin passed his same gen 4Runner on to a child and got the new Land Cruiser so not exactly same but he loves the powertrain and general vehicle dynamics which could be pertinent considering how much is shared with new era Tacoma, Land Cruiser and soon coming new era 4Runner.

My wife more than I did disliked the prior gen 4Runner and Tacoma interiors and likes new era 4Runner interior. With a whole lot of testing, being in queue for Land Cruiser and deciding no, I went for pickup format to replace my van, and decided no need for the expense of the hybrid in my case. The new powertrain if hybrid or the mid and standard for most Tacoma are all powerful and smooth.

If you have a 4Runner you should know the Tacoma back seat cannot be comfy as a 4Runner or Land Cruiser is. That goes for the leg room and how upright the seat is. It is certainly better than some mid and small sized pickups over time but in my case it is a mostly work and task oriented vehicle and I also purposely have the long bed for that.

Look of the new interiors is different but it's fine functionally. I found the 14 inch display to be a bit of a distraction and you can't dim the CarPlay or Android Auto like you can the rest of the dash. That probably puts me as a rare person who actually likes the smaller display. All the icons or display were not so much of a distraction in testing as the general amount of light from the larger display at night even if in night mode. Still, I can see how some very much like the large display.

Do you have your 14” display set to dark mode?

I have the small display but tested and set both to dark mode. I could not see a way to dim both as you can the rest of the dashboard. For sure dark mode is better at night but I'd like either size to be able to go darker.

Our first testing all the vehicles was when still dark early into last spring. Most of the Tacomas available to test drive at the time had the large display. A test ride of one with smaller display was when I considered the matter of distraction. It's nothing against either of them. Personally I like the interior to be as dark and not distracting as possible.

We have two CarPlay vehicles and I also set backgrounds to be more subtle.

Definitely not a fan of the humongous screen trend either. Big distraction at night and the glow messes up your night vision.

I feel lucky I had that awareness before committing to the purchase.
You lose CarPlay then and the navigation can be really nice. Ideally one could adjust the CarPlay dim when you do for the other display.

My preference is for the smaller screen as well. Since I have one of the lower level trims, the 14" wasn't even an option for me, but was/am fine having the 8". I'd definitely agree with you that we're in the minority on that---- most seem to love the larger screen.

I had a 4th gen for 20 years and recently picked up a 21 Tacoma TRD OR. Really wish I would have gotten another 4Runner mainly for the rear space and 4.0 V6 and transmission. Love the Tacoma for what it is but 4Runner all day.

Came from a 2020 TRD Pro 4Runner. Miss the army green and look of the 4Runner but the power and fuel savings and overall ride quality of the Tacoma make it a better overall daily driver.

I don't own either, but I was temporarily looking and tested several 2024 Tacomas and a 2024 TRD OR 4Runner.

Wildly different feeling machines. In short:

Tacoma no doubt has a more modern feel, has more low end torque and a more refined feeling drive train. You won't miss the long gears of the 5 speed in the 4Runner. Plus the interior is well thought out in my mind.

4Runner is a lot softer and a lot more comfortable to me. I found the new Tacoma too jittery over rough pavement and small bumps, so much so that after an extended test drive I decided to wait and see what the new 6th gen 4Runner will be like. I could overlook the 5th gen 4Runners dated interior since I love the ride quality and the powertrain is good enough, but the MPG keeps me out of those. (Edit: The Tacoma handles curves so much better due to being stiffer though. It handles awesomely)
