Got some Injora 1.9 silicone inserts. I didn't realize that they came in packs of 4 because I bought two packs (different stiffnesses though) so I have enough for two sets of wheels.

I think I can stretch the 1.9 inserts onto 2.2 wheels, I'll find out when I get the 2.2's from Aliexpress.

I also stole the brass slugs out of one of my beat pair of foams and stuffed them in the silicone inserts. This adds 105g of brass to each tire!

When did silicone inserts become a thing? How easy are they to center in the tire?

They started becoming popular probably a year or two ago. I know about two or three years ago people started 3D printing TPU inserts and I think bigger companies just started making them out of silicone.

I'm not sure what you mean by center in the tire? They fit snugly around the barrel of the wheel and don't move. The main advantage to me of the silicone inserts is they don't degrade and become nasty, especially if you vent your tires. My foams are all crusty and smashed unevenly and the silicone inserts don't have that issue.

I've got one question, probably a dumb one.

An SCX24 will be my first crawler, and I see tons of shock options but they all seem to lift these rigs.

By removing the springs, is this the only way I can keep from getting such a tall lift? I'd want more travel with the new shocks, but without the big lifts and I see a few youtubers not running springs on them.

I'm still a newbie but what I've seen so far in my research, atleast in the 1/18 world is people running springs from a pen internally of the shock to compress it a bit or using rubber bands externally (kinda ghetto in my opinion). Another route is a different chassis with more mounting options.

Yeah the problem is, it seems that chassis options are hit and miss even with the nice stuff

Lots of comments about how nice and high-end LGRP are, but also complaints about how they don't play nicely with things like Mazz links, and other brand parts.

They're all meant for an SCX24, but opinions seem to differ when using parts from different companies. Kind of like what you were seeing with brass knuckle housings and gearsets.

Ah, yeah..thats makes it a little difficult. Trying to make sure everything will play nice. Have you looked into shock towers?

Naw haven't gone that far - I'm just in the pre-planning stages as I learned there are a variety of options to choose from in terms of wheelbase length which further complicates things.

So when looking at aftermarket chassis, it's assumed you'll have knowledge of which chassis you wish to go with (some are listed as XL, others are not).

On the tiny crawlers I run spring-less. On larger crawlers I will run a soft enough spring that the truck will sit about halfway down its travel so I have adequate bump and droop travel.

Would you guys grease the gear that goes from the motor to the trans?

my gut says no based on all
The dirt I blew out of there but a second opinion would help

On my actual racing rigs, we never used anything at all.

You just want to make sure the gap is just right - it'll sound off too when it's too close like it'll click or something.

No grease, just set the gap correct.

Amain is having a 20% off Hobbywing sale. I just bought two motor/esc combos for my Tamiya kits and a Fusion SE for the LC80.

@Roody Check out https://www.bamftireinserts.com/. There are a couple different guys selling these. They are pricey but far superior to foam and Injora inserts. Buy once, cry once.

I hear ya. That's why I have 5 sets of tires, but only use my Jconcepts with these inserts. You can buy a motor, servo, chassis, or so many other fun things for $100ish.
