sounds like you need better tires, and to stop sooner.

i hope your mechanic is very aware of the liability that this would open him up to if it results in a serious accident.

Well, like Solomon said to arguing sides: "You are right... And you are right, too..."
Matters of personal habits/skills/conditions and design of the vehicle.
    So, you right....

My mustang didn't have ABS. Which Ford installed ABS in Mustangs starting '94. Mine was a '78. I was not able to stop on the ice which I was sliding all over but I was able to control my car back to my lane without hitting anything. Pumping the brakes works as long as you start using it about a mile back before the stop line or traffic light which allows you to control the braking easy. Slamming the brakes on the ice is VERY BAD idea.

OP, disabling ABS is bad idea because you may not be covered by insurance if accident has been caused.. If they find out that ABS has been disabled, you are screwed. Which is why ABS installed in vehicles for that reason. Mechanics won't fix that at your request because of liability. Mechanics do not want to be responsible for that.

You will get used to it. You will be glad that you didn't disable it. You will thank us in here.

Instead of disabling it, try this method, pumping the brakes early like a mile back before the stop sign or light. That way, your truck will be slowed down so you will be able to stop by the stop line. That will not make ABS go crazy. ABS helps you slow down and control the road.

FYI, Most stuff is connected to ABS like what posters said... ABS in newer vehicles can not be disabled, period.

If you don't like it, then sell the truck and get something else that you are comfortable with.

There is a side of this that I haven't seen mentioned.

There are countless utterly stupid things that have been forced upon us to quiet a certain group of people who like to whine about life. Yes ABS works good most of the time, but could ABS be like the idiotic gas cans that certain people had to have, that don't work, and cause far more spillage, than the old style?

I'm curious how many wrongful deaths have been caused, or will be caused by technology in automobiles. If the ABS computer fails, what happens? If the self driving computer fails what happens? It's all calculated to produce sales, under the guise of safety and comfort, reality be damned.:)

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Who is liable in an incident where ABS has not been disabled? What about the guy who ignores his TPMS and has an incident? Will he see lawsuits because he did not put enough air in his tires? Maybe there was a sticker on the back window that obscured view?

What if I ignore that thing on my phone that gives me the High Volume Warning when pairing to my vehicle?

So many worries. I need to reconsider if I should be getting behind the wheel of this modern deathtrap at all...

Was following behind a large dump truck a few years ago and back four drivers side tires exploded and tire parts flew through the air at us. Stood on the brake peddle and swerved best I could to avoid being hit. ABS brakes saved our bacon that day! Glad I had them. There seem to be more accidents these days but are much more survivable due to safety advances such as ABS, seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, perimeter cages, etc, etc.

I was thinking about this thread today. We had our first snow/sleet/freezing rain since I got the truck. Going up a small hill, I can see skid marks going every which way. However, my Tacoma kept going perfectly straight and fine partly because it has a "limited slip" in the rear differential that is controlled by the ABS.
There was no squirreliness or hesitation, it was completely not noticeable.

I've also had a RAV4 and seen the Trac or other lights come on in slippery conditions but switching to a rear drive truck, I expected to notice slippage/correction more.

For stopping on snow/ice/rain ABS is the best alternative for those without the driving experience in those conditions.

I don't think he was advocating for you to change your truck.

Again, the system doesn’t necessarily guarantee a shorter stop, but more control to avoid whatever it is you’re trying to avoid.
If your speed is appropriate for the conditions you’re better off (most of the time) with leaving it operational.
