There is a stick rod for cast iron that i decent luck with in the past. The stuff i used had a really high nickel content. Proper preheat an cooling is needed.

    Interesting.

Curious to see how you'd wrap it if it's a sort of mat.

I actually do have a welding blanket, specifically made for welding, and used it successfully for covering up vehicle parts when I welded on vehicles.

Held up well and I still have it now, though it'd look ugly covering anything up.

A pic would help, naturally

Guess it's labeled for fire, but I have used it as a welding blanket and it was marketed as such?

I’ll post a pic up tomorrow. It’s a round smoker, so just gonna wrap it around it. Mat is 16” x 48”.

I have used something similar for sweating copper pipe, but if this will be sealed around the smoker I would use rockwool

You need boiler insulation. It's called "refractory". It's a fireproof insulation.

I know this is the welding thread but I think it's cool seeing final versions of stuff. Got these back from PC today:

Stoked to get them on the truck now.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
Nice work, they look really good.

It's unfortunate that Ford wasn't more accommodating with frame access for bolt on sliders (for the Bronco.) The fully boxed frame (with internal supports) makes frame plates extremely complicated. I assume you aren't planning on using these as sliders.

Not as hard as I use the welded on Tacoma ones. A couple others on the Bronco forum built theirs off the factory rock rails like I did and it can actually support the weight of the vehicle (with some deflection of course) but realistically it's more to be used as a step for the kid, a jacking point in a pinch, and to protect from sticks flying up into the body. These are temporary till I can prioritize getting some metal techs eventually. This truck is more the "overland" rig while the Tacoma is the harder crawler.

Do you have some pics of this rig in the bronco thread? Or somewhere? I’d love to see it. Wife and I did 6000+ miles in a 2 door this summer.

my semi-permanent-temporary trailer ball adapter broke all the screws off lugging the trailer around the yard. partly my problem, as i got lazy and stopped tightening them all the way with a screwdriver-- i was hoping to keep the screws finger tight so i could easily swap between functions. but the slop from finger tight screws added extra stress.

i spent the morning working on revision 2.

more slop than the original design, which was why i went with the original screw fastening style to eliminate the slop in the first version.
but after using/breaking it, i've since realized that a 1/2" of movement is nothing in the scheme of things for something like this. so went with a double-sheer pin style and some scrap c-channel.

if this breaks, it means my trailer weight is crazy, which will be an entirely different set of problems, but also not unexpected given the level of effort i'm putting into it. but i do have a concept design for a $400 motorized jack foot plate adapter worked out in my head... cheaper and nicer than the official $600 Trailer Valet, but of course, vevor's already come out with a $300 alternative.

For some reason I thought you couldn't. What are some metals that are very difficult if not impossible to weld?
