Oh my gosh, I can't get over what a cutie she is! Thanks for posting a pic!

Found out our hot water heater was broken when kid was taken a shower. He was mad there was no hot water.

After a few min of trouble shooting, found the upper heating element is fubared. After a run to Home Depot, got 2 new elements, ready to change tomorrow. Give me a reason for the yearly draining that I was procrastinating on.

Sorry to hear this. I know that feeling. We’ve had two new units installed in 10 years… guess the minerals in the well water we are in doesn’t help. Hopefully the elements get you back up and running quickly!!

 

This is why I love my water softener. The old toilet I had when I moved in there was literally no buildup in the tank and looked brand new. Nothing builds up like the old nasty city water I used to have. Now, it's on its last legs, but still works.

 

It's good to change the little thermostat that switches between the upper and lower too, they get arced up sometimes as it's just a bimetallic switch. My HWH is past it's due date so I won't be surprised when she blows. The pressure here in HdG is pushing 110 psi. ugh

Good thing the water heater work is inside besides putting the hose outside to drain.

That sounds terrible but good to hear it’s under control now.

I’ve never looked into if we needed a water softener system. We’re not on a well so it shouldn’t be too bad. Maybe one day I’ll test it.

 

You'd be surprised. Water softeners on public water around here is very common. Place I used to live in had horrible city water, but it was a rental so I wasn't spending money on a unit.

Replaced heating element. Filled tank, had hot water valves open and pressure relief valve open and the tank burst water from the top and behind thermostat and element plate. Fun times…

Process was the same as refilling tank every year for past few to drain out sediment

 

Ooof. Welp, congrats on the new water heater right before Thanksgiving!

And all of the sudden the thousand I just paid for my dogs surgery doesn't hurt too bad lol

 

Sounds like you can do it yourself, so just parts cost so there's a plus...

My house when I bought it the hot water was only through the oil boiler. I had to replace my electrical panel and then completely replumb stuff to put one in. That was a $2500 heater

 

Unfortunately, I don’t have the tools, skills or parts to make it an easy job. Have a plumber coming out for a quote tonight and someone will be replacing it tomorrow. It’s 14+ years old so probably time anyway
