Sideproject—my son wants to build his bigger Titanic scale model so it sinks like the real deal. So…bulkhead building and initial floats are on the dock(et).

Added the red anti-fouling coat. Dropped some loose change in the compartments for test ballast and we hand-poured water in the appropriate spots to simulate the iceberg fillup. Bath time suggests she’ll sink just fine.

I see a red ship and I want to paint it black. Plus a gash. Plus all the other stuff.

Getting so close. Drilled out a bazillion portholes with a pin vise (curse Revell and its non-drilled portholes!!).

Fairy lights glued to a zip tie and slipped inside.

Gonna sink it in the local harbor at night with my co-builder 10yo a few buddies and GoPros.

    Then back to my submarines.

Have been sidetracked again trying to kitbash and mod this old Wraith-class eFrame toy to look more its cartoon source material — Exosquad (1993-4).

When you try to take these things apart, you are both impressed by the design and then amused with what appears to be last-minute changes made during the play-testing stage; these little skags on the back of the exo feet were likely added after they realized it toppled over way too easily.

These are superlative. What’s the trick to getting the tiny weathered font in there? Is it just careful layering over an original decal, or…?

yeah, you do chipping after decals. just put whatever color is below, sponged or tiny brush speckled, on top.

what you have the arrow to is most likely some "flicking" of color. (brush across a toothpick or similar)

Okay, a couple of friends got tired of me talking big about getting an airbrush someday and got me a airbrush, compressor, and starter paints for my birthday. Any tips for starting out?

i am def not a airbrush pro.

thinning your paints is very important for airbrush.
read up/watch on thinning whichever type of paint you are going to use and once you get a feel, you can eyeball it.
when starting out, it is prob good to go with brand recommended thinners. then you can figure out alternative that work as well or better.

i have not found much, when thinned correctly, that doesn't perform well at around 20 psi.

if you are going to be spraying acrylics.....clean up needs to be done soon after painting.

I just ran across this thread and will read the posts. I'm involved on the Hot Wheels link with my builds and modifications to Hot Wheels and 1/64 diecasts. Before that I was building model cars and trucks since the 1970s and have over 400 builds 1/24 scale. I'm into mostly vintage drag racing but my builds go into what ever was popular at the time with street rods. Right now most of my recent builds have been Gasser related. I still build kits but the prices are the reason I went with 1/64s. I set $20 as the max I will pay for a kit and I still find them at swap meets, yard sales and flea markets. When I do my next "photo shoot" next month I could post some of my builds. I will be reading these until then.

I absolutely love Tamiya air brush paint. That being said it is a little pricey. Acrylic works fine but most will need to be thinned. There are different approaches to holding the brush. I use a 2 handed method. I have two Iwata brushes . One is a cup like yours, the other holds the paint on the bottom, which I like the best. I have invested in multiple caps to allow me to switch out paint quicker. When painting, think in layers and color blending. Don’t overdo. Multiple coats will guard against sag. Let it dry between coats and resist the temptation to touch it…haha. Don’t get impatient. Lots of videos out there for technique. Most important…have fun
