Bingo. OP getting all worked up about ABS on a truck thats 20+ years newer than his old vehicle. ABS technology changes, especially including the point you mentioned the LSD works off ABS.

But i'm sure he'll chime in again thinking he knows best about snow driving and for everyone else to mind their business LOL

Reading all these posts makes it hard to believe us older folks managed to survive driving before ABS was a thing.
I guess the next generation of drivers will tell us you can’t drive without adaptive cruise, auto braking and lane departure assist

    > IF you are in an accident and the black box in your car shows the ABS was manually deactivated, it is quite possible the insurance company will use that as an excuse to deny coverage.

The reason you never get behind the wheel when you've had anything to drink is because some idiot who is texting while driving will hit you, and it will be your fault. I'ma go with the same logic here. If you hit someone who pulls out in front of you and comes to a stop on a snowy road, now it's YOUR fault because you disabled a safety feature which (they can argue) would have gotten you to stop in time.

Wouldn’t the same rules apply if one turned off auto braking or stability control?
Both of those features could be turned off by the driver on any vehicle I owned that had them

Yes the ability to turn those off is too assist you getting unstuck. You will notice they reset and are back on when you restart.

The stability control will default to on but the auto braking stays however the driver sets it. I turned mine off shortly after I bought the vehicle and it hasn’t been on since

Wife's new car has all that and it makes me love my Tacoma that much more.

Many of us grew up without many of the driving aids but we also weren't surrounded by dozens of airbags and distractions. ABS has saved my bacon a few times but I've also never had an issue in non ABS cars admittedly because I knew in the back of my mind my margin of error was much smaller.

Out of all the safety features of the newer vehicles I like ABS.

Some of the features are downright stupid and dangerous.
Example: My ‘21 JL Rubicon has a feature that emits a loud tone and message pops up on the infotainment screen advising there’s emergency vehicles ahead.
Do you want to guess where my attention was before the distraction to look at the screen? Yup, straight ahead where it should be

fundamentally, it was a numbers game. there was simply more people, and every one of them were far more disposable. the only one's even posting about 'things as they were' are survivors, reinforcing the concept of survivorship bias.

now we as a human race have pivoted to a firm stance where "every life matters". make of it what you will, and this can get really political really fast, but that perspective changes the formula quite a lot in terms of reducing deaths by any means necessary, but boils down to a simple formula:

if all lives matter, than all deaths are unacceptable, and by extension, any means to prevent any deaths become acceptable.

and that's how we get all these 'safety' systems to further protect occupants from even themselves in some cases.

    time for an interjection here:

ABS DOES NOT MAKE ANY VEHICLE TO STOP FASTER. that understanding is fundamentally flawed. ABS works by removing pad contact momentarily. no vehicle can stop faster with less brake pad contact.

ABS specifically trades ultimate stopping power for directional control. by pulsing the brake pad contact, it alternates between providing braking force, and not providing any braking force and in those moments allows for steering inputs in poor conditions to be applied.

without ABS, a full panic-stop on a slippery crowned road will lock the front wheels, and the vehicle will seem to ignore steering inputs, and instead follow gravity and the road, generally where it shouldn't be going.

i'm not arguing that your core statement is incorrect, only the flawed concept of ABS increasing stopping distance in any conditions.

once anyone starts modifying a vehicle-- whether the owner is doing it, or another party is being paid to do it, that someone needs to be aware that they're ultimately accepting the potential of the liability of disabling something that's been nationally mandated for a reason. and should the vehicle be involved in an accident, the lack of that safety system could very easily be blamed for the cause.

it's really no different than if someone were to install tv's in the place of airbags, and then attempt to get their medical bills paid for after sustaining larger than typical injuries when another driver causes an incident.

ABS was never designed to decrease stopping distances.

I can see how you'd want to disable it when offroading or driving in deep snow..

But regular driving on paved surfaces, sharing the road with other vehicles, leave it alone. If you can't stop quick enough you need to slow down or get better tires

ABS can cause problems especially when it is over sensitive like on my 1999 Solara V6 and 2003 Camry XLE 4cyl. If you even hit a slight dip in the road or expansion joint while braking the ABS will activate with a buzz and you will not stop as quickly. I had my Solara start sliding the rear out after coming onto a curved exit ramp a little too fast and had to let off the brake and brake again with less force to regain control. On my 03 Camry if you braked even lightly over an expansion joint it would activate and might slide. My 1992 Camry V6 had a 4 wheel disk brake and a variable brake proportioning valve with an arm attached to the body or something. Though it nosedived when you brake hard it never locked the rear brakes and you always had good control because the system was balanced properly. It did not have ABS. Toyota chose to eliminate that variable valve when they went to ABS as standard so too much brake force applied to the rear wheels initially would cause the ABS to activate. My 2004 Camry V6 had ABS with Brake Force Distribution which was supposed to sense when you slammed on the brakes and use the ABS motor to apply more force but the result was it was not as touchy and stopped in shorter distances without as must tendency to slide. Newer models had that feature on the V6s before they made it standard. Other brands of the same vintage we've owned, 90s Ford, Mazda, late 90s and 2003 Acura were not over sensitive with their ABS like my first Toyota's with ABS were.

I am drowning in deeply believed miss-information in this thread. I’m not even going to try to steer it on a different path. I’m throwing in the towel before the fight starts. Peace out.

I just completely removed my brake system, i prefer to use my feet so that i can control how fast and hard i stop. It's so much better to have your feet on the ground and feel as one with the earth.
I don't need some government regulated system telling me how to stop my vehicle in my path of travel. I live life on my terms, on the back of a majestic, translucent steed, shooting flaming arrows across the bridge of Hemdale into the mists of Avalon!
