We had them out to quote 7 awning style windows in the front of our house. Mid century modern flat rough design not common in the northeast so wanted to stay with the design. Both quotes were absurd. Mid 30s for renewal by Anderson and high 20s for Marvin. We held off on that project. I’ll do the door install if it comes pre hung. I’m just wanting to know a reputable company to look at and order from.

At over 10% of the cost of my house, I’d hang plywood with a cling wrap window.

I often hear of outrageous quotes such as these. Unfortunately, many don't even question and/or have no problem paying those prices.

The one that sticks out the most was a free kitchen consultation since we are HD Pro members. I knew this was going to be a classic sales pitch but it included a free measure and design consult which was nice. They priced the cabinets at 80k+ BUT since we were getting married shortly after they would apply a manager special bringing the price into the 70s. The guy was shocked that we wouldn’t sign the dotted line to commit to the project. I mean what a deal they offered that we wouldn’t just walk away?!

I wonder if they're related to the solar sales people.

Think I said it in here before. We had Anderson Windows come out to give us a quote on 5 windows. Two bedrooms. Quoted us just over 20k. Then told us if we sign the agreement right then, they would give us a 5k discount.

The best part was when I told him I would need to discuss it with the wife because it was more than we had planned on spending ( just trying to be nice and not tell him he was crazy) he says well I’ll let you two talk it over and I step out and check my email. Says this as he’s stepping out the door. When he came back in we told him we were all set. You could tell he was mad and started packing his crap up and left said have a nice day as he walked out.

We had a decent quote from Anderson when they quoted us 10 windows last year? 12k I think.

We ended up going with windura though and they were very good to work with. Not sure if they do doors. I did my own sliding doors.

Last year, Anderson quoted me 10K for two windows. Yes, they were big windows, but...

I replaced both windows myself for just under 3k - including scaffold rental.

I used the same type/quality window that was in the house. Does Anderson make a better quality window? Their frame won't rot (my issue with both windows) but the glass has no better thermal properties.

Besides, aside from being a PITA, changing the windows was kind of fun. o_O

Curious, who makes quality windows these days? I assume there's different grades or tiers for each manufacturer?

Yes, manufacturer's have different lines. For example. Andersen has a 200 series and 400 series line of windows.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I'm in need of assistance. So I have a customer with an old ship captains house that was built in 1914. It's all custom woodworking and simply stunning. There is an outer and inner entry door. These are both solid Oak and are nearly 4" thick.

The inner door is now rubbing on the stone floor in the main hallway. Normally, I'd pop the door off the hinges and trim accordingly with my track saw.

I'd hate to guess what these doors weight and there are 6 hinges per door. At quick glance, they don't seem to have removable pins Removing is probably not an option.

Any ideas on how to trim a little off the bottom with the door hung?

I was thinking about flat file/rasp and only hitting the areas that are rubbing.

Maybe try a large sanding disk ( I use them for my shop smith sander.) sticky on one side. I would stick it to a piece of cardboard or maybe poster board (big enough to get my foot on it) and place it under the door just before it rubs the tile. Run the door back and forth until you gain space. Move the paper towards the edge of the door as you work it?? Once you gain space you can then get a tool underneath it to rasp it out. We lived in Eureka Calif. growing up I worked on several Victorian’s and learned this trick from the contractor
