Anybody has tips to remove ball joints? I had the great idea of changing the ball joints while visiting my inlaws and can’t press the old one out…

Prybar and BFH. You can borrow loaner BJ press from most of the parts stores.

Assume you have removed the circlip from the top of the ball joint.

    MAPP gas torch helps, too.

For anybody having trouble in the future just get an impact driver with 1400lbs of drive torque and you’ll get them pulled and pressed new ones in no time.

Maybe a 3rd gen is different but Toyota doesn’t sell OEM ball joints for a 2nd gen. I had to replace the entire control arm with the ball joints already pressed in. I paid a lot of $$$ for that but now it’s tight with no sqeaks either. You get new bushings. Good luck.

That's why I was asking if it was the lower. The boots are torn on my lower control arm ball joints and from what I gather I'd need to order new lower arms from Toyota. A little under $400 with the current 25% off sale.

I upgraded my LBJs with MOOG serviceable ones. Never again will I put myself through that. Next time I’m replacing the entire lower arm with a stock replacement or Dirt Kings. Major PITA.

You can order them from Japan: https://www.ebay.com/itm/204810750516

Unless you live in the desert, when replacing the whole arm, the cam bolts are likely rust seized and will require a sawzall. Add another $350 or so in cam bolts.

I had to buy a Milwaukee 1/2" Impact Gun to get the ball joints out. I tried to do the job at my Dad's house using his air compressor and air gun, not powerful enough. I also rented a ball joint removal kit from O' Reilly iirc. The job went much better with the Milwaukee impact gun. I am about to change mine again, aftermarket ones I put in 18 months ago is already shot on the drivers side. Gonna replace them both with OEM I ordered on Ebay from Japan. No way am I changing the whole lc arm for a ball joint. One thing the remember when changing them out is having all the right tools available, anti seize for re-install and a good working torque wrench to put it all back correctly. I also like to paint mark the nuts/bolts when i'm done for quick visual reference for the next few weeks as I put some miles on the truck.

I like this guy's video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mskKqDpBFcI

It was useful to find this recent thread because I am about to rebuild the front end suspension on our 2016 SR5. The one piece of information I will add to this - because I do not see it stated here - is that ball joints are much easier to press out if anti-sieze compound is applied to the mating surfaces at the time of installation. I doubt I will find any lubricant in the knuckles on my vehicle...
