Hello Tacoma experts I am here once again seeking your wisdom and expertise.

My Tacoma every time it starts ticks for a bit and then goes away. I am thinking just an injector but would like the communities confirmation.

Atkinson cycle motors have a tick and it’s normal for cleaning cycles.

when you put your phone in the engine compartment to record sound is like putting it 2 inches away from a 12" subwoofer. Close the hood and try again.

Are you unable to hear the audible ticking sound that is present from the video start until 4-5 seconds? It is quite distinct in the video even with how close it is.

My 2018 2GR-FKS has done that for the second time in 2 months. I've heard a ticking noise at startup that lasts for hardly a second. There's 42k miles on it and I change the oil and filter every 6 months. I do a lot of short trips. The 2 other Tacomas I had were the 4L 1GR variety and they were kind of noisy and ran fine. This 2GR is quieter with faint ticking noises that seem normal. The startup ticking episodes are new.

Not sure what to do. I should have asked if anyone else experienced the same issue. Since it has only happened twice in a few months it kind of had me concerned. I know that the 2GR-FKS runs on both port and direct injectors up to a certain RPM then switches to direct only. I would imagine if it is a typical cleaning cycle thing it would do it all the time.

An update on the ticking noise as it has changed sound from what was in the original video to the ones below

This video has a smooth idle that then suddenly starts to have a different sound tick or clack.
    https://youtube.com/shorts/pLyezRI0zao?feature=share

This video has the same different sound tick or clack but at a different speed even though at both times the video was taken the truck was at idle.
    https://youtube.com/shorts/zg5SlN0i8WI?feature=share

Is the Tacoma world still thinking this is a normal function of the Atkinson cycle?

    Thank you,

    Michael

My 2020 with 28kmi ticks like the first video at warm idle. Can't hear it at cold idle, and doesn’t do it at higher rpm.
Mine never ticks at the faster rate of the second video.
Sorry, can't really speak to whether it's normal.
Maybe @Bishop84 could give you feedback?

I had it looked at by the dealer and it turned out to be a faulty EVAP purge valve. Replaced it and all is back to normal. No more tick.
