Kimm'r had a remote start installed right after she bought the RAV4. I don't know the brand. It was installed by AMS, a local car audio shop that I have spent way too much money at over the years. The remote has worked flawlessly. As a security measure, the car shuts off when you open the door. She has push button start. Dunno if that matters.

Are you sure its a ballast? If so are you sure its not bad? Most the time I think we find relays in automotive-but I am no expert. I have also had them (relays) go bad. I know ballasts go bad over time. Last time I had a light issue it was a relay. Also when my locker quit.

@rubbersidedown, we put an aftermarket remote start in out 14 CR-V. Had a local place (yea, like two hours away...) do it. Works great. Thought about one for the truck but it lives in the garage all winter...

Yeah, this one is like $160 and an easy install with no wire cutting or splicing. From what it looks like in the install video, there is an existing harness in our trucks that can be tapped into with this kit. There are different setups and prices for button start vs. key start.

I went ahead and ordered the kit. I'll report back on the install process, features, and how well it works.

I was thinking relay(s) and wondering when @WiscoPat was hearing it click (i.e.when turning drl on? or running lights or headlights.) because I think there are multiple relays related to the front lights and the combination switch on the column.?

    Useful if you park outside.
Taco tranny's, in my experience, frown on cold temps.

My 2016 acted funny after parking outside at the shack.
1st gen did it as well in the past, before I had a garage.
Real sluggish or won't barely move until warmed up.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Remote start is wonderful, especially remote starts that work with your cellphone. They usually can tell you if your doors are locked or if you forgot to lock them, how your battery is doing, etc. Plus if you work in a factory like me, you can start it from a long ways away from inside a warehouse. I've also been at racing events and unlocking the vehicle for family or friends from the stands is pretty convenient too.

if there's no bad fuses or connections, I'd guess they are finally toast. If I remember right when I looked at going that route, the reason I decided not to was the lifespan of them.

    Sacrifices had to be made.

Driving around with the bed bars...cars viewed above the bar are too far away for me to care about.
Cars viewed below the bar are too funkin' close and deserve a brake check.
Cars that land right in view of the bar is perfect because I don't have to look at their headlights in my rearview. :D

(I'm eyeing up the anytime mod and a front camera.)

the anytime mod is pretty sweet. I really liked the one I had that used the steering wheel controls. it was a lot more convenient to use since thats where your hands already are

I think that might be the case - I believe HIDs have something like a 3,000 hour lifespan. Otherwise it could be what @pearing described of a bad relay, but it seems ok.

Now I have a decision to make - figuring out a replacement HID set up, finding some used Halogen housings, or going oem LED.
