I can vouch for that comment 100%. Some hunters act like they own the public land that they have been hunting for several seasons. While camping and hunting in the North Georgia mountains one year, we had a truck load of rednecks just pull up into our camping spot. They all climb out and I ask them what's going on. I said we're here first and hunting this area. He tells me that him and his buddies have been hunting this area for years, and If we come back into the woods while they're hunting I'd be shot. Needless to say we packed up and left since there were 5 of them and 2 of us. I really didn't need the hassle. stupid fucking people.

I think, at least partly to blame is the "pandemic" when a shitload of non-hunters started hunting and didn't know shit or have ethics taught to them from a young age.

Also, in that same vein, is the individual state wildlife/game commissions/agencies trying their damndest to recruit "new/replacement" hunters to fill the void (lost license $$$$) from us OLD FARTS leaving the ranks of license buyers.

They never grew up with the 'sport' and were never taught hunter ethics or how to do things the right way!!! Just buy a license and gun and do whatever you feel you have a right to do.

Just my grumpy old man opinion on things.

while I agree that the surge of new hunters has been problematic, this issue ive experienced long before the pandemic. Particularly it feels like the closer I get to larger towns and cities, the more ignorant hunters I come across.

Eastern North Carolina is probably the worst ive experienced. Dogs running deer (which is legal and I hate it) and those hunters will shoot even when they dont have a clear shot. Its the wildest thing ive experienced as a hunter

I agree, people have been shitting on each other on public land as long as I can remember.
    2 examples...

A few years ago me and a buddy were in a parking spot on a small piece of public (Illinois) and we were talking to a couple of Georgia guys that had gotten there before we did. We told them that since they were there before us that we'd find somewhere else to hunt. So, whilst we were standing around lying about the deer we hadnt seen, a truck pulls up next to us with 5 guys in it; they get out of the truck, grab their stuff and take off walking into the woods. Without saying a word to us. Perfectly legal? Yes it is. But still shitty (in my opinion) to at least not ask where people are planning on hunting.

Last week my buddy pulled into a parking area before daylight (the parking area is on the end of a one lane road), was getting his bow/treestand out of the truck; whilst doing that, another truck pulled up, turned around, drove back the way he'd come from and dropped 2 hunters off on the road 200 yards away. Without saying a word to my buddy. Legal? Yep. Extra shitty. Double hell yes.

    Stuff like ths happens constantly.
Me and my buddy have a rule; if there's a vehicle there...we go somewhere else. There's a hundred places to go within 15 miles, we can always find an area void of humans.

Yes, but unfortunately you gotta think about the kids who are the children of said jackasses in post above… have to have the ethics and respect to pass it on.. it’s been going on for generations and will continue.

I agree, but it is getting worse IMO. People who never hunted until recently have no idea how to act other than to do what they want when they want and how they want. It is a 'me first and only me society' anymore.

Earlier in my turkey hunting career, up at camp in Pa. there was another group of guys who liked to hunt the same area as I did. I would touch base ahead of time to see where they were going the next day and hunt accordingly. Got to be friends with them and watched the Penguins first Stanley Cup games at my camp with them instead of them having to go to a bar. Never had a conflict on hunting spots!!

And only 94 of them have someone in it at this exact moment lol. Seriously though, public land sucks sometimes. It can be very rewarding, you can have some really great encounters with other hunters, but you can also have some of the very worst. Last year, I tried to hunt a new area on some national forest land. Passed a few vehicles on one road, so decided not to hunt anywhere near there. Went down about 4 miles, not a truck in sight, and found what looked like could be a pretty good spot topographically on OnX app. Started walking in (just thick hardwoods, no established trail) and immediately ran into a gentleman sitting on a stump 75 yds off the road or so. Apologized, and started to turn around back to the truck, when he insisted he'd get up and leave, was headed out anyways. He didn't have any orange on, didn't really want to talk, and acted as if I was the game warden. Dude was a little sketchy, but wasn't a vehicle in sight, so no idea where he parked/walked in from.

you may be right! You are probably touching on even bigger issues that are now seen making its way into things that were once more of a niche crowd.. your point about a “me first and only me society” isn’t wrong

What goes around comes around. I do and have done a good bit of turkey and duck hunting and a little bit of deer on public land for 40 years. If I see a truck I go somewhere else and respect whoever got there first. Don’t matter how the other fella acts, I always treat them like I’d want to be treated. Have had the same courtesy returned. But if it’s needed there are ways to deal with folks stepping on you. And I ain’t talking about conflict or damage. Psychological warfare.

You guys should see the f*ckery living in the heart of Weyerhaeuser timber holdings… :anonymous:

there’s state land opportunities in WA don’t get me wrong but my specific area has thousands of people jockeying for a limited number of permits(sells out in moments) to get in the woods, this aside from and hunting license or special draw.. I’m lucky enough to have access to some private land

This guy stopped at 30 yards the one I shot Saturday was 100 yards and moving through the woods away from me . Surprised myself with that shot after all my eye surgeries really makes it difficult.
